Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (IATA: CGO, ICAO: ZHCC) is the principal airport serving Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province, China.
Xinzheng airport is located 37 km southeast of Zhengzhou. It was opened on 28 August 1997, the 21st international airport in China. It was built to replace Dongjiao Airport, which lies in the immediate vicinity of downtown Zhengzhou.
There are domestic and regional flights from the airport to most major cities in the People's Republic of China, international cargo flights as well as charter flights to Thailand during the travel season.
In 2014, Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport was the 17th-busiest airport in the People's Republic of China with 15,805,443 passengers.
History
New terminal and second runway
In 2013, China's State Council approved the expansion of Zhengzhou's airport in alignment with its first zone for an Airport-based Economy (ZAEZ),[1] the construction of a new terminal and runway began in earnest. Currently under construction, the new terminal will consist of 470,000m2 of terminal building, an additional 77 aircraft parking stands and six de-icing stations. A second runway will run parallel to the north of the current runway. Operations testing is currently due to be scheduled by December, 2015.[2] By 2030, the project calls for a total of five runways capable of handling 70 million passengers annually.
Recent developments
In late 2015 Emirates announced it would begin service to Zhengzhou via Yinchuan from May 2016, as part of the airline's expansion plans in China. This is Zhengzhou's first connection to the Middle East.[3]
Zhengzhou International Airport is reportedly the 13th airport with most delayed flights in the world. [4] Only 56.8% of its flights are not classified as delayed. However, nine other airports in China have a higher rate of flight delays.
