Zabaniyya

Zabaniyya (Arabic: الزبانية‎‎) also known as the Nineteen Angels of Hell are according to Islam angels of punishment. They are mentioned in the Quran (96:18). Without naming them, they also appear in 66:6 and 74:30. The Quran states, the punishments are carried out according to Gods order.[1]

The origin of the Zabaniyya is uncertain. It has been suggested the word Zabaniyya may have been derived from the syriac shabbāyā which has been used to describe angels, who conduct the souls of the dead or as frightening demons. Another suggestion assing the origin to rabbāniyya referring to the lords angelic counsil.[2]
