Yvonne Coomber is a British artist[3] who works en plein air and is best known for her depictions of the English countryside.[4] Many of her paintings are inspired by the Devon landscape,[5] with particular focusses on the natural world and colour.

Early life

Coomber was raised on a farm[6] and spent a large part of her youth in Ireland.[7] She spent time living and working in the Middle East, Australia, Africa, the United States and Europe.[8] She also studied philosophy and literature at Brighton University.[9]

Before working as an artist, Coomber first worked in nursing before training as a reflexologist and reiki healer.[10]

Career

Coomber's work is created en plein air, often using using mixed media - such as glitter, gold leaf, pigments and paint[11] - to depict subjects like wild hedgerows, tangled meadows, open moorlands and dense forests.[12] She uses paintbrushes, sponges, rags, palette knives and her fingers.[13] Her influences include impressionism, abstract expressionism and colour field painting.

Yvonne Coomber's work has been exhibited since 2000 and is held in public and private art galleries worldwide.[14] It has also been displayed at Brownston Gallery in Modbury,[15] Azure Gallery in Sidmouth,[16] Imagianation in St. Ives,[17] Paragon Gallery in Exeter,[18] the Edgar Modern Gallery in Bath,[19] Store Street Gallery in London and at Dart Gallery in Dartmouth.[20]

Coomber's first solo exhibition took place at isendyouthis Gallery, Ashburton, in 2004.[21] In 2014, Coomber had a solo show at Brighton's Art5 Gallery.[22] In April of the same year, Yvonne Coomber Art was incorporated.[23] She returned to Art5 Gallery in March 2016 for an exhibition called "Paradise".[24]/ She has also exhibited at the Country Living Christmas Fair.[25]

In 2016, Coomber appeared on the BBC's Countryfile in an episode about British meadows.[26] She also launched a collection of fine art cushions at Birmingham NEC's Spring Fair.[27]

Personal life

Her gallery and studio are based in Totnes, Devon,[28][29] where she lives[30] with husband and fellow artist Mike Boyer and their four children - godson Charly Panton, stepsons Romek and Rio Boyer,[31][32] and daughter Poppy, who recently graduated from Wimbledon College of Art.[33]
