Wolves in Wolves

Rainbow, designed by Julie Fletcher

Wolves in Wolves is a public art exhibition that is taking place in Wolverhampton, England, between 5 July and 24 September 2017.[1] The exhibit consists of 30 1.5 metre high wolf sculptures, located throughout Wolverhampton city centre and the city's West Park. The wolves were individually designed by local artists, with sponsorship funding provided by a selection of public and private sector organisations. The wolves form a 4.5 mile trail taking in West Park, Chapel Ash and Wolverhampton city centre, with a map available to help people track them down.[2] Wolves in Wolves is Wolverhampton's largest public art event,[3] which also sees an exhibition of 70 mini wolves, designed and painted by pupils from 35 primary schools, community groups and artists, on display at Wolverhampton Art Gallery.[4][5]

Background

The concept of a Wolves in Wolverhampton public sculpture trail was submitted to the City of Wolverhampton Council's 100:100 ideas portal by employee, Mandeep ("Manor") Singh. The local authority approved of the idea and, alongside local charity Outside Centre and Enjoy Wolverhampton, a private sector led organization which aims to improve Wolverhampton city centre, put a timescale in place for implementation. In May 2016, Marie Sewell of The Boho Creative was approached by Dr Paul Darke of the Outside Centre, a disability arts organization based in Wolverhampton and commissioned to design the wolf sculpture.[6] This was further tweaked, and by March 2017, the first three fibre glass wolves were delivered to the Moreton School in the Bushbury Hill area of the city, with the school partnered with sponsors with pupils tasked with creating a design for the Mayoral Wolf, a wolf sculpture designed with the mayor of Wolverhampton in mind.[7]

Auction

Following the eleven-week exhibit, the wolves are to be auctioned off to raise money for the City of Wolverhampton’s Mayoral charities and the Outside Centre, a disability arts charity.

Exhibits

30 wolf sculptures, each uniquely designed by both local and international artists are situated in and around Wolverhampton city centre. The majority of these are outdoors, with some within art galleries and theatres.[8]
