Winterbourne Chalk Pit

Winterbourne Chalk Pit is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) based in Winterbourne, Berkshire.[1] It is located within the North Wessex Downs.[2]

Geography

The site is 0.1 acres in size.[3] The chalk pit is rich in Macrofossils, particularly belemnites.[4]

The chalk sediments date back to the late Cretaceous period of geological time, about 80 million years ago.[2] The Chalk pit is the only known area containing rocks of this age in the western part of the London Basin.[2]

History

In 1970 the site was designated a site of special scientific interest (SSSI).[2] In 1981 the site was used as a source of evidence in an important geological paper by Jarvis and Woodroof.[2][4]
