Wind River is a 2017 American thriller film written and directed by Taylor Sheridan. The film stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen as a US Fish and Wildlife Service agent and FBI agent, respectively, who try to solve a murder on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming.

It premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and was released on August 4, 2017, by The Weinstein Company.[5]

Premise

US Fish and Wildlife Service agent Cory Lambert (Renner) discovers a body in the rugged wilderness of the Wind River Indian Reservation. The FBI sends in rookie agent Jane Banner (Olsen), but she is unprepared for the difficulties created by the oppressive weather and isolation of the Wyoming winter. When she employs Cory as a tracker, the two venture deep into a world ravaged by violence and the elements.

Cast

Production

In May 2015, it was announced Chris Pine and Elizabeth Olsen had joined the cast of the film, with Taylor Sheridan directing the film from a screenplay he wrote.[6][7] By January 2016, Pine dropped out of the film, and was replaced with Jeremy Renner.[8] The project began filming on March 31, 2016 in Park City, Utah, with Jon Bernthal, Graham Greene, Julia Jones and Gil Birmingham added to the cast.[9] Kelsey Asbille joined the cast on April 26, 2016.[10] Nick Cave and Warren Ellis composed the film's score.[11]

Release

The Weinstein Company acquired the distribution rights on May 13, 2016 during the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.[12] In January 2017, it was announced the company would no longer distribute the film.[13] However, the distribution deal was later finalized.[14] It was released on August 4, 2017.[15]

Critical response

Wind River was described as a "humanistic crime drama, though this one has more skill than excitement," "a thrilling, violent finale to the Hell or High Water and Sicario trilogy" and "Coen brothers noir meets the case of the week."[16][17] The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 87% based on 106 reviews, with an average rating of 7.6/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Wind River lures viewers into a character-driven mystery with smart writing, a strong cast, and a skillfully rendered setting that delivers the bitter chill promised by its title."[18] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 73 out of 100, based on 40 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[19]

David Ehrlich of IndieWire gave the film a B: "But if Wind River shares Sheridan’s self-evident weaknesses, it also makes the most of his signature strengths. [...] Wind River may not blow you away, but this bitter, visceral, and almost parodically intense thriller knows what it takes to survive."[20]
