William Lloyd George, 3rd Viscount Tenby

William Lloyd George, 3rd Viscount Tenby, JP (born 7 November 1927) is a British peer and former Army officer.

Lord Tenby was elected one of the initial ninety hereditary peers to remain in the House of Lords after the passing of the House of Lords Act 1999 until his retirement in 2015.

Family

Lord Tenby is the son of Gwilym Lloyd George, 1st Viscount Tenby and Edna Gwenfrom Jones. His father was a National Liberal politician who later served as Home Secretary under Winston Churchill and Anthony Eden.

The 3rd Viscount Tenby's paternal grandfather was David Lloyd George (later the Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor), Liberal Prime Minister (1916–1922), who previously served as Chancellor of the Exchequer 1908–1915; thus he and his heirs are also in remainder to that earldom; ironically, the rejection, out of hand, of his grandfather David Lloyd George's Budget, by the House of Lords in 1909, precipitated the ongoing pressure for reform of the Upper House, despite the Lloyd George family's now holding two hereditary peerage titles. His elder brother, Captain David Lloyd George RA, served in World War II and succeeded as the 2nd Viscount Tenby in 1967; he died unmarried in 1983.

Biography

Educated at Eastbourne College and St Catharine's College, Cambridge, where he read History graduating as a Bachelor of Arts in 1949, and in 1983, he succeeded his elder brother in the viscountcy. Tenby had previously served in the British Army, being commissioned in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, reaching the rank of Captain.

He worked as editorial assistant for Herbert Jenkins Ltd from 1951–54, and in the advertisement department of Associated Newspapers from 1954–57. Between 1957 and 1974, he was Group Advertising Manager of United Dominions Trust Ltd, and from 1974–87, as Tenby was PR Advisor to the Chairman of Kleinwort Benson Ltd.

In 1985, Lord Tenby was engaged as a consultant to the Williams Lea Group until 1993. He was Director of Ugland International plc from 1993–95, becoming Chairman of the Trustees of Byways Residential Home and President of the Aldershot Group Riding for the Disabled. Tenby served as President of the Campaign for Rural England (CPRE Hants) between 1985 and 2001.

Since 1955, Lord Tenby has been married to Ursula Diana Ethel Medlicott, daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Edward Medlicott DSO.[1] They have two daughters and one son: The Hon. Timothy Lloyd George, Sara[2] and Clare.[3]

Lord Tenby stood down from the House of Lords on 1 May 2015.[4] Retirement of peers was enabled following the House of Lords Reform Act 2014: Lord Tenby's retirement as a Crossbench hereditary peer triggered a by-election, which was won by Alderman the Lord Mountevans (now Lord Mayor of London for 2015-16).
