William L. Utley
William L. Utley (July 10, 1814 – March 4, 1887)[1] was an American portrait artist, hotel keeper, politician, and newspaper editor from Racine, Wisconsin.
Utley was born in Monson, Massachusetts and moved to Racine in 1844.[2] He was the commanding officer of the 22nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (the "Abolition Regiment") during the American Civil War. He served as Adjutant General of Wisconsin, as well as being a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1851 to 1852 and the Wisconsin State Senate from 1861 to 1862.[3] He died of diabetes at his home in Racine.[2]
