Career

Youth

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Trapp is a product of Columbus Crew SC and a former varsity player at Lincoln High School where he led them to the Division 1 State Championship in 2009 and earned the 2010 NSCAA National High School Player of the Year award.[3] Trapp went to the University of Akron where he started in 45 games for the team from 2011 to 2012, scoring once.[3]

During his youth career in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, Trapp received many accolades. With the Crew Academy side, Trapp won the Crew Soccer Academy Player of the Year twice, in 2009 and again in 2010.[3] He was also given the honor of captaining the Crew U16 and U18 sides.[3] While with Akron, Trapp won two All-MAC First Team honors in 2011 and 2012 and Third Team NSCAA All-American honors in 2012.[3] He also helped the Crew Academy win the 2012 U-19 NYSA National Championship, the team's third in four years.[3]

On December 13, 2012 it was announced that Trapp had signed a homegrown contract with the Columbus Crew SC of Major League Soccer.[3] He then made his professional debut with the side in a league match on July 6, 2013 against the Portland Timbers at MAPFRE Stadium in which he started and played the full 90 minutes as the Crew won the match 1–0, ending the Timbers' 15-match unbeaten streak.[4]

On September 13, 2014, Trapp scored his first professional goal, in a 2–2 draw at the Houston Dynamo.[5]

On October 20, 2014, following a 3–1 Crew victory over the New York Red Bulls, Thierry Henry said Trapp "owned the show," telling reporters after the match, "Wil Trapp was outstanding today. I know Higuain usually gets all the [credit], and their striker Schoenfeld will get credit because he scored two goals. But Wil Trapp was the key…Wil Trapp does his job, he brings the ball out for them... difficult to stop. He has for him a good future. As an American, [you] should be happy. I thought he was the difference."[6][7]

Trapp was named as a 2016 MLS All-Star, the first Homegrown Player in Crew SC history to be named as an all-star. He made the 22-man game day roster, coming on as a halftime substitute for Giovani dos Santos in the 2–1 defeat to Arsenal.[8][9]

International

Trapp played for the U-14, U-15 and U-18 national teams. He first gained national attention with the U-20 national team, appearing for them in the 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship, the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup, and the 2013 Toulon Tournament. Trapp was selected to the Best XI at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship.

Trapp played in all 270 minutes for the United States in the U-20 World Cup and captained the side against France. However, the United States failed to progress out of the group stage.[10]

Trapp was a part of the U-23 national team for the 2015 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship, where the team placed third. He captained the side in the 2016 CONCACAF-CONMEBOL play-off, a 3–2 aggregate defeat for the USA that sent Colombia to the Olympics.[11]

Trapp made his debut for the senior national team on January 28, 2015 in a 3–2 friendly defeat at Chile. He came on as a substitute for Mix Diskerud in the 60th minute.[12]
