The West University of Timișoara (Romanian: Universitatea de Vest din Timișoara) is a university located in Timișoara, Romania. Established in 1962, it is organized in 11 Faculties. Classified as a research and education university by the Ministry of Education, it is one of the five members of the Universitaria Consortium (the group of elite Romanian universities).[2] In the 2016 QS World University Rankings, West University was included in the Top 700 universities of the world, together with three other Romanian universities.[3][4]
History
The West University of Timișoara was formally established by Decree-Law no. 660 / December 30, 1944, promulgated by King Michael I of Romania. Implementation of the Decree-Law was abandoned, except for the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine. In 1948 it was inaugurated the Pedagogical Institute, through the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. In 1956 the Faculty of Philology is added, with five specializations: Romanian, French, English, German and Russian.
In 1970 there were twelve faculties with twenty specializations. The structure of the institution was diversified by setting up new departments and specializations including history, geography, biology, chemistry, music and fine arts.
In 2016 the university owned seventeen amphitheaters, twenty-five classrooms and seventy-four laboratories.[5]

According to the QS World University Rankings West University of Timișoara ranked 59 in the EECA (Emerging Europe & Central Asia) University Rankings.[6] According to the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities , West University of Timișoara ranked 1456 in the World and 6 in the country.[7]
