West Milton is a village in the county of Dorset in South West England, situated in the West Dorset administrative district approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) northeast of Bridport. The name is derived from "Middle ton", the middle farm (i.e. in the centre of the parish), "West" being added to distinguish it from Milton Abbas near Blandford.[1]
The writer and broadcaster Kenneth Allsop lived in the old water mill in West Milton until his death in 1973. Here he wrote In the Country, a collection of essays mostly about the surrounding Dorset countryside.[2]
Notable Buildings
Although there has been little activity in recent years, the village once housed two seperate inns - The Red Lion (now known as Red Lion Cottages) and The Leopard (now known as Leopard Cottage).[3] St. Michael's chapel stands to the North of the village as a single tower; the remaining remnants of the ancient St. Mary's church.[4] This is because between 1873-1876 the chapel building was removed from the original West Milton site to form the school in nearby Powerstock.[5]
