Walter Furlong

Walter Furlong (1 September 1893 – 11 December 1973) was an Irish [[Fianna Fáil and later independent]] politician. Walter's father was an RIC constable, who died when Walter was a boy. Walter was taken under the care of his grandfather, Timothy O' Callaghan. O' Callaghan was a member of the Fenian Brotherhood(his name is listed on the National Monument in the Grand Parade Cork) Walter became active in Nationalist Politics in Cork before the outbreak of World War 1. He was a member of Fianna Eireann and was its first scoutmaster in the city.[1]

Walter was a member of G company of the Old IRA and was involved in missions during the War of Independence. One of his recorded operations in which he participated was a raid on Captain Clarke's estate in Farran Co. Cork. [2] Word was received that Captain Clarke was holding a shooting party in his estate and a group of 11 men from G company decided to raid his house to get hold of much needed arms and ammunition. Walter was put on guard but was surprised by  an armed Clarke, Walter drew first and shot Clarke in the hand. Walter and the others escaped with the arms in Clarke's car.In an ironic twist of fate Clarke's son led a business delegation to Cork in 1951 and was greeted by Walter who happened to be Lord Mayor that year-  Clarke junior  had no idea he was geeting the man who had shot and injured his father! 


  He was elected on his second attempt, to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork Borough constituency at the 1944 general election.[3] He lost his Dáil seat at the 1948 general election,[4] and was an unsuccessful candidate at the 1951 general election.

Furlong was a member of Cork City Council and served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1951.

According to his death notice Furlong was in "G" Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Cork Brigade, Old IRA in 1916, and had been interned on Bere Island, released on the signing of the Truce.
