Waitangi is the main port and settlement on the Chatham Islands. It is located on the southern shore of Petre Bay, on the west coast of the main island. This community is by far the largest settlement in the archipelago, with a population of about 250, about 40% of the group's population, estimated in 2016 to be 610. The population has been decreasing but has stabilized over the last four years.[1]
Climate
Waitangi experiences an oceanic climate with mild winters and warm summers. Precipitation can fall at any time throughout the year, with the highest percent of rain being centered during the winter.

- Health services - Four bed hospital facility, is staffed by a Doctor and a minimum of two Nurses at any one time
- Police - one Constable
- Justice - 6 monthly visiting District Court Judge
- Schools - Te One School, Kaingaroa School and another school on Pitt Island.
- Banking - ANZ Bank that is in the same building as the Post Office.
- Shop - Waitangi General store which tends to be better stocked and more expensive than Dough 'n' Go.
- Cafe - Food you might expect from a Fish & Chip shop, with a selection of burgers and various toppings.
- Radio - FM station "Radio Weka" - volunteers.
- Television - as of May 1991 New Zealand broadcasts are recorded on video and arrive for rebroadcast - volunteers.
- Telephone by satellite to New Zealand. There is no mobile phone reception on the island.
- Hotel - Hotel Chathams, on seafront. Doubles as Pub.
- Liquor Store - Waitangi wholesalers liquor merchant fine wine, spirits and beer, in Hospital Road. There is a shell display house on the same site.
