New York University's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service (NYU Wagner, Wagner) is a public policy school that offers a comprehensive curriculum in public and nonprofit policy and management, health policy and management, international development, and urban planning.

History

The Puck Building- Home of NYU Wagner

In 1938, NYU offered its first Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree in response to overfilled public service-oriented classes at the university. Fifteen years later, NYU established a stand-alone school—the School for Public Service and Social Work.[1] At around the same time, Robert Ferdinand Wagner Jr., as Mayor of New York City, worked to build public housing and schools, and established the right for city employees to collectively bargain. Wagner also made housing discrimination based on race, creed, or color illegal in New York City.[2] In 1989, NYU renamed the school the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service in honor of the three-term mayor after receiving a major donation from the Wagner family.

In 2004, NYU Wagner relocated to the Puck Building, a famous New York City landmark in the city’s SoHo neighborhood.[3]

NYU Wagner also offers joint degree programs with the NYU School of Law, NYU Stern School of Business, NYU School of Medicine, the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies, the NYU College of Arts and Science, and the NYU College of Global Public Health.

NYU Wagner is ranked eleventh nationally in the most recent U.S. News and World Report ranking of U.S. Public Affairs schools. In addition, NYU Wagner is ranked #2 in City Management, #2 in Health Policy and Management, #5 in Nonprofit Management, #7 in Public Finance and Budgeting, #8 in Social Policy, and #9 in Public Management and Administration.[4] In 2015, NYU Wagner was ranked third in the Innovative Public Service school list by the Best Value Schools.[5]

Programs

The Master of Public Administration in Public and Nonprofit Management and Policy prepares students with a set of frameworks and analytic skills that will serve them in many roles, organizations, and sectors.[16] The required coursework is interdisciplinary and includes finance, policy, and management classes. Students focus on one of the following specializations:

The Master of Public Administration in Health Policy and Management program has been recognized as one of the best in the country. The program focuses on management, finance, and policy, and provides students with the cutting-edge concepts and skills needed to shape the future of health policy and management.[17] Students focus on one of the following specializations:

The Master of Urban Planning program prepares students to confront critical urban challenges. Students learn to balance development, community needs and social justice, provision of critical public services, sustainability, and security.[18] Students focus on one of the following specializations:

The Master of Science in Public Policy program provides students with the skills needed to assess, create, and implement public policy that has a lasting impact on the public good. It is a quantitative, one-year program that prepares future leaders for a career in policy analysis in a range of fields and sectors, from local housing policy to national health policy to international development.[19]

The Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA) program allows working public service leaders to gain new skills, expand their networks, and apply leadership experiences to make a larger impact on the world.[20] NYU Wagner offers three different EMPA programs:

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Administration program prepares students to produce insights required for effective and equitable public and nonprofit programs and policies.[21] The program is interdisciplinary, so students can draw on economics, political science, sociology, psychology, organization studies, and other fields.

In addition to offerings in the NYU Wagner course listings, students are eligible to cross-register for many courses at the other graduate and professional schools at NYU.

The Undergraduate Major in Public Policy—offered jointly with the NYU College of Arts and Science—prepares undergraduates to play roles in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of policies that address significant domestic and global challenges.[22] Upon completion of the major, students are equipped with a core set of skills and tools that comprise the foundation of the study of public policy.

NYU Wagner offers the following Undergraduate Minors in partnership with several New York University schools:

Combined Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs at NYU Wagner allow students to complete undergraduate and graduate degrees in five years instead of the traditional six. Combined dual-degree BA-MPA programs include:

The BA-MUP with the College of Arts and Science allows New York University undergraduates majoring in Economics, International Relations, Metropolitan Studies, Politics, Sociology, or Urban Design and Architecture who have completed most of their undergraduate degrees to take graduate courses and receive the Master’s in Urban Planning.

Capstone Project

All MPA and MUP students are required to complete a team-based Capstone project where they turn their classroom learning into practice to help nonprofit, public, and private sector organizations tackle a critical challenge. Capstone teams spend an academic year addressing issues and identifying opportunities for clients or conducting research on a pressing social question—in a complex and real-world environment.
