Money in the Bank is a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event, produced annually by WWE. It is named after the Money in the Bank ladder match, which previously only took place at WrestleMania. The Money in the Bank ladder match debuted at WrestleMania 21 in 2005. The Money in the Bank match would then be held at the next five WrestleMania events, after which the match concept was spun off on to its own pay-per-view beginning in 2010.

Concept

The "Money in the Bank" pay-per-view centers around a ladder match, the prize of which is a briefcase containing a contract for a championship match. The winner of the contract (which has been contained in the various colored briefcases, e.g., red for Raw or Blue for SmackDown) can then cash in the contract at a time and place of their choosing anytime within the next year - beginning the night they win the briefcase - for a championship match.

In 2010 and 2011, the annual pay-per-views featured two Money in the Bank ladder matches. One ladder match was for the Raw brand with a contract for a WWE Championship match, while the other ladder match was for the SmackDown brand with a contract for a World Heavyweight Championship match. The brand split ended in August 2011, after which, the Money in the Bank pay-per-views continued to have two ladder matches for contracts for the respective titles, but they were not brand exclusive. After the two titles were unified in December 2013, a contract for the unified WWE World Heavyweight Championship became the prize of a single Money in the Bank ladder match. The brand split returned after the 2016 event, and the 2017 pay-per-view was made a SmackDown exclusive event. The contract in the ladder match was for a WWE Championship (formerly WWE World Heavyweight Championship) match. The 2017 event also featured the first-ever Women's Money in the Bank ladder match with its contract being for a SmackDown Women's Championship match.^[1]

Theme song

Money in the Bank is the only WWE pay-per-view event with a regular theme song, as all but the first event have used "Money in the Bank" by in-house WWE composer Jim Johnston as its theme song.^[2] This is in stark contrast to other pay-per-view events, which use songs sponsored by mainstream recording artists, which was the case with the first event using "Money" by I Fight Dragons.^[3] Before the advent of the pay-per-view, the "Money in the Bank" song was used as the entrance music for future U.S. President Donald Trump for his numerous guest appearances on WWE television.^[4]

• After The Miz's win at Money in the Bank 2010, he became the first superstar to win Money in the Bank contract while being a champion (Currently WWE United States Champion) and the second superstar after Rob Van Dam to hold a Money in the Bank contract and a title at the same time. On November 22 on Raw, he cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on Randy Orton to become the new WWE Champion. His reign came to last for 160 days.
• After winning the Money in the Bank 2010, Kane cashed in his contract later that night and defeated Rey Mysterio (who had just defeated Jack Swagger) to win the World Heavyweight Championship, thus making Kane record for the fastest cash in 47 minutes. His reign came to last for 154 days.
• After winning the Money in the Bank 2011, Alberto Del Rio became the first wrestler in history to win a Royal Rumble and a Money in the Bank match in the same year. Following the orders of Vince McMahon, Del Rio attempted to cash in his contract later that same night on CM Punk, who had just defeated John Cena for the WWE Championship, but was attacked and laid out by Punk before he could do so. Del Rio eventually cashed in his contract on August 14 at SummerSlam, challenging CM Punk after the main event, where he had defeated John Cena to become the undisputed WWE Champion. Between the two matches, Punk was attacked by Kevin Nash, which led to Del Rio scoring a quick pinfall victory to win the WWE Championship for the first time. His reign came to last for 35 days.
• Daniel Bryan successful cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on December 18 at TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs against the World Heavyweight Champion Big Show, who had just defeated Mark Henry. His reign came to last for 105 days.
• John Cena cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on July 23 at Raw 1000 against CM Punk, and won the match by disqualification after Big Show interfered, becoming the first person to cash in a Money in the Bank contract and not win a title.
• Dolph Ziggler, who had won Money in the Bank contract match for the World Heavyweight Championship, feuded with Vickie Guerrero against John Cena and AJ Lee, culminating in a ladder match for the World Heavyweight Championship Money in the Bank contract at TLC on December 16, where Ziggler won after AJ turned on Cena. On April 8, 2013 Raw after WrestleMania 29, Ziggler cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on an injured Alberto Del Rio to win his second World Heavyweight Championship. This made Ziggler become the Money in the Banker winner who held the contract for the longest period at 267 days. His reign came to last for 69 days.
• On August 18 at SummerSlam, Randy Orton turned heel for the first time since 2010 after he cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on Daniel Bryan, who had just won the WWE Championship and had been subsequently attacked by special guest referee Triple H, who also counted the pinfall to give Orton his seventh WWE title. His reign came to last for 28 days.
• Damien Sandow cashed in his Money in the Bank contract against John Cena on October 28 on Raw, but Cena won the match by pinfall. Although Cena had cashed in his 2012 Money in the Bank contract and didn't win the title, this made Sandow the first wrestler not to win the title and lose the match.
• Seth Rollins successful cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on March 29, 2015 at WrestleMania 31 during Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns' match, making it into a triple threat match, which Rollins won by pinning Reigns to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. His reign came to last for 220 days.
• On November 22, at Survivor Series, Sheamus cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and defeated newly crowned champion Roman Reigns. His reign came to last for 22 days.
• On June 19, at Money in the Bank, later that same night, Dean Ambrose cashed-in his briefcase and quickly defeated Seth Rollins to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship; this was just after Rollins captured the world title from Roman Reigns. Thus making Ambrose the second person to cash in his Money in the Bank contract on the same night. His reign came to last for 84 days.
