Voskevaz Winery (Armenian: Ոսկեվազի Գինու Գործարան (Voskevazi Ginu Gortsaran)), is one of the oldest enterprises of Armenia for the production of wine. The winery was opened in 1932 in Voskevaz during the Soviet period, to process the grapes of the fertile vineyards in Aragatsotn, at the foothills of Mount Aragats.

History

Voskevaz Winery in October 2016

The village of Voskevaz, meaning golden bunch in Armenian, is located on the edge of the picturesque gorge of Kasagh River. The region has an ancient history of wine-making. Many karases (clay potteries) were found in the nearby church of Surp Hovhannes, dating back to the 7th century.[1]

The Voskevaz Winery was founded in 1932 as a state-owned enterprise during the Soviet period. It was privatized in 2004 to become a limited liability company. The factory was replenished with new production facilities from Italy. However, unique Armenian karases from the 19th century are still in use in the winery, to maintain the traditional way for wine fermentation and aging, that was used in Armenia since ancient times, mainly in the regions of Areni and Teishebaini.
