Vismayam (English: Amazement) is a 2016 Indian Malayalam language film written and directed by Tollywood Language Director Chandra Sekhar Yeleti starring Mohanlal, Gautami, Viswant Duddumpudi, and Raina Rao in lead roles. As the film was produced by Sai Korrapati, the film was simultaneously shot in Telugu as Manamantha with a slightly different cast, which has Chandra Mohan replacing P. Balachandran and Gollapudi Maruti Rao replacing Joy Mathew, because this film marks the Tollywood debut of Mollywood actor Mohanlal. [1][2] The film was officially launched on 29 November 2015 in Hyderabad, majority of the shooting occurred in Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai and principal photography commenced on the following day.[3]

Vismayam was released on 5 August 2016. The Tamil version titled Namadhu released simultaneously along with the original Telugu and Malayalam versions.

Plot

Vismayam follows the lives of 4 people from different paths and ambitions. The first person is shown to be Sairam (Mohanlal), a Malayali from Kerala who is settled in Hyderabad and is the Assistant Manager of Vijetha Super Market in the Kacheguda area. He lives with his uncle Ravi Pillai alias Cheriya Ammavan (P. Balachandran). He is always appreciated by his Manager for his innovative ideas. But Vishwanath (Harsha Vardhan) always feels jealous of him. The next person is shown to be Mahitha (Raina Rao), a school graduating girl who has Raghava Menon (Nassar) as principal. She hangs out with number of friends. The third person is shown to be Abhiram (Viswant Duddumpudi), who is a Computer-Engineer from Nanakramguda background, which is an IT area. He loves his friends and his lover Aira (Anisha Ambrose), who too falls in love with him for his good attitude towards humans. The last person is shown to be Gayathri (Gawtami), who is a house wife from Koti and lives with Lakshmi (Urvashi), her neighbour. She always finds it difficult to run life as she has no enough money for her family. But she is always energized by her old professor (Joy Mathew) and she has a great respect for him. One day, Sairam meets Dass (P. Ravi Shankar), a local moneylender and befriends him to teach his co-worker Vishwanath a lesson. He is soon promoted as the Manager of the Super Market for his new innovative ideas. And his manager feels happy for him. To celebrate his success, Sairam and his uncle go for a tour to Thiruvananthapuram and they drink in a bar. He soon receives a phone call from Vishwanath's daughter, sighting that he is missing since two days. Then, he confronts Dass and learns that he had kidnapped him for more money. Sairam feels guilty for his action and decides to find Vishwanath. Meanwhile, Abhiram-Aira's friendship developes and they are always seen together. As Vishwanath is missing, Mahitha is involved in the case but is protected by the Hyderabad Police Inspector (Brahmaji), a Telugu Speaking person of Hyderabad origin. He warns Raghava Menon to take care of Mahitha as she is put in danger. Raghava Menon agrees too. Gayathri is offered a job by her professor in Singapore but she denies sighting that she always wants to take care of her family. Sairam is blackmailed by Dass for finding Vishwanath. But later, he is shown to be dead owing to Smoking Habits. Hence, Sairam decides to surrender himself to the Hyderabad Police. Mahitha is consoled by an astrologer from Nanakram Guda who knows her problems. As the days pass by, Abhiram is unfortunately betrayed by Aira, who says to him that money is more important for her rather than him. Gayathri is accused of Stealing jewels from a jewelery shop and Mahitha decides to go away as she is unable to find her family. The four decide to commit suicide and in the process, it is revealed to the audience that Sairam, Gayathri, Abhiram and Mahitha are actually from the same family based in Trivandrum. Gayathri is Sairam's wife, and Abhiram and Mahitha are his Children. In the process of finding Vishwanath, the four reconcile and fortunately Vishwanath is also saved by Sairam. The film thus ends with a happy note with the four taking a Selfie for their reconciliation party.

Pre-production

The film was officially announced by Telugu film director Chandra Sekhar Yeleti on 14 October 2015. Produced by Sai Korrapati under his production company Varahi Chalana Chitram, the film was planned as a bilingual simultaneously made in Telugu and Malayalam languages. Mohanlal and Gautami was announced in the lead roles.[4] The filming was then said to start by the third week of November. Yeleti described the film as a "family entertainer which involves four stories".[5] According to film's executive producer Krishna Rao, it is an anthology film comprising four different stories, which at the end, will unite to the main plot. In Telugu, the film is titled Manamantha, while the film has also a Tamil dubbed version titled as Namadhu.[6] Tamil lyricist Madhan Karky wrote the lyrics for the songs in Tamil as well as the dialogues for Namadhu.[7]

Mohanlal and Gautami are teaming after a gap of 19 years since Iruvar (1997) directed by Maniratnam.[8] Through the film, Gautami is returning to Malayalam cinema after a gap of 17 years. She will be dubbing herself for all the languages. According to the film's associate-director Siby Jose Chalissery, Mohanlal is trying two different acting styles for each version, and taking extra care for bringing that difference, "the scenes aren't exactly similar in the two versions. There are variations in the mannerisms, emotions and dialogue delivery,".[9] He plays an assistant manager in a supermarket, a down-to-earth middle class man who "has strong principles and is not willing to forgo them for small gains in life,". Mohanlal dubbed for himself for all the languages, including the Tamil dubbed version.[10] There was also negotiation with Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan for an important role.[11] In October 2015, the production team also announced a casting call for a teenage girl.[12] Viswant Duddumpudi was selected by Yeleti for one of the major roles in the film after performing a screen test for him.[13] The casting team signed Anisha Ambrose for an important role as they were impressed with her performance in her past few films, and were particularly looking for a new face.[14] She plays the love interest of Duddumpudi.[13]

Filming

The film was formally launched in Hyderabad on 29 November 2015. Principal photography and regular filming began there on 30 November.[15] Mohanlal gave dates for 25 days for filming.[5] His portions were completed by January third week.[16] The first schedule of filming was completed by the end of January.[9]

Film's soundtrack comprises five songs composed by Mahesh Shankar. The soundtrack album was released by Vel Records on 27 July 2016.[17]

Release

The film was released on 5 August 2016 all over India by Maxlab Cinemas and Entertainments. Its television satellite right was purchased by Star India for an amount of ₹6.8 crore (US$1.1 million) for Vismayam and Manamantha for their channels Asianet and MAA TV respectively. Star India also agreed a contract for spending an additional ₹20 lakh (US$31,000) for the film's promotion and publicity works.[18]

Box office

In the opening day, Vismayam collected a sum of ₹67.80 lakh (US$110,000) from Kerala box office with a net amount of ₹54.65 lakh (US$85,000). In three days run, it grossed ₹2.60 crore (US$410,000) with a net amount of ₹2.10 crore (US$330,000) and a share of ₹1.17 crore (US$180,000).[19][20]
