Virginia's 13th House of Delegates district
Virginia's 13th House of Delegates district, consisting of parts of Manassas Park City and Prince William County, has been represented by Bob Marshall since 1991.[1]
2017 election
In 2017, Republican Bob Marshall is running for re-election. Marshall has represented the district for 11 terms of office.[2]
The candidates running in the Democratic primary were Steven Jansen, Mansimran Kahlon, Danica Roem, and Andrew Adams.[3]
Roem is a journalist and a transgender woman.[2] Roem has lived in Manassas her entire life.[4] Roem wants to make improvements to Virginia's highways and expand of public transportation.[4] Her campaign also focuses on employment and education in Virginia.[4] Commenting on Marshall's proposed bill to regulate use of restrooms in schools, at highway rest stops, and in other government buildings,[5] Roem said that Marshall's "legislative priorities are more concerned with where I go to the bathroom than how his constituents get to work."[6]
Kahlon is the owner of a trucking company.[7] Kahlon has previously served as chairman of the Brenstville Magisterial Democratic Committee.[7]
Jansen is an attorney who worked as a prosecutor near Detroit, Michigan.[7] Jansen has served as director of the National Center for Community Prosecution.[7]
Adams works as a manager of a pest-control business.[7] Adams served in the United States Army as an an active-duty officer for seven years, including deployments to Afghanistan and Kuwait.[7]
Roem won the Democratic primary and will advance to the general election against Marshall.[2] Roem was the first candidate who is openly transgender to win a Virginia state legislative primary.[4] If she wins the general election, she would be the only legislator in the United States who is openly transgender.[4]
