Vienna Biocenter

The Vienna Biocenter (VBC) is a life science location and cluster of research institutes, universities and biotech companies in Vienna, Austria. Growing around the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) since its opening in 1988, the entities at the Vienna Biocenter now form one of the region’s biggest life science centers with more than 1,600 employees.[1]

Members and facilities

The Vienna Biocenter is an association of four research institutes, 17 biotech companies, three universities and a combined total of 1600 employees.

The four basic research institutes at the center cooperate closely: the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP); the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL) of University of Vienna and Medical University of Vienna; the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW); and the Gregor Mendel Institute of Molecular Plant Biology (GMI), also of the ÖAW. These institutes maintain a joint international PhD programme.

The “Vienna Biocenter Core Facilities” (VBCF) offer central services, largely scientific, but also including a child care centre.[2]

Scientists of the Vienna Biocenter institutes have been awarded 40 ERC grants and 11 Wittgenstein Awards.[3]
