Varushamellam Vasantham is a 2002 Tamil language film directed by Ravi Shankar and produced by R. B. Choudary. The film featured the Manoj, Kunal and Anita Hassanandani in the lead roles, while M. N. Nambiar plays a supporting role. The film, which had music composed by Sirpi, opened in May 2002. The film was remade in Telugu as Manchivaadu.
Plot
Raja (Manoj Bharathiraja) is a lazy, irresponsible and young lad, whereas Ramesh (Kunal) is a highly talented and educated lad who earns very much. Obviously, the grandfather of both is M. N. Nambiar who a retired collector of the area, hates Raja and loves and takes care of Ramesh. He every day goes to temple and prays for his grandson Ramesh only and also he talks nasty about Raja and always pride of his grandson Ramesh.
One day Raja's relation Latha (Anita Hassanandani Reddy) comes to their home with their family for visit. Seeing her, Raja falls in love with her in first meeting. Also the nature and courtesy of Latha, makes Raja thirst of love on her. Meanwhile Ramesh also has love on who challenges with his own brother Raja.
Raja, accepting the challenge, tries in several ways to impress Latha. First on advice from his friend Mayilswamy, he goes to the current collector and asks him to make him as a collector. Without education, the collector who was in respect of the previous collector M.N.Nambiar simply warns and sends him back. So they try the next step to learn English, the English teacher break downs and forget her English in vain to educate English to him.
In between, Ramesh indulges and does some nasty tricks on Raja, to make Latha inconvenient with Raja. Ramesh lies Raja that Latha likes sapota very much. Without knowing Latha hates sapota, Raja brings a basket full of sapota before Latha, and Latha get allergic and gets angry with Raja.
All the things done by Raja, irritates M.N.Nambiar very much and he scolds Raja for this. But Raja least cares about that and he continues his efforts.
On an occasion, Latha mention's to Raja that illiterate or poorness will not affect love between two. If a true lover or husband with his own earning buys a single flower and gives to the lover is the precious thing than crores of money.
So Raja leaving his irresponsibility goes to pattarai, knife molding and making place, joins and works daily with hurting to earn money to gift Latha for her birthday which falls in few days. Seeing the change of the Raja, M.N. Nambiar feels some soft corner on Raja and understands that he works becoz of Latha.
On the Birthday of Latha, every one gifts higher gifts, where Ramesh also gifts a costly laptop to her. But Raja was only able to buy a much low rate skirt with shirt. When Raja saw the gifts like diamond ring, chains and laptop, he tries to hide the gift in his hand. But Latha finds Raja hiding the gift and wantedly goes to Raja and receives the dress and immediately changes the dress, in which she looks like an angel.
All get stunned and amused. M.N.Nambiar asks Latha to be married with Raja and the parents of Latha for respect on M.N.Nambiar least agrees. But to amusement of all Raja, tells he don't want to marry Latha even he was loving Latha. M.N.Nambiar gets angry and scolds him for he tried to marry a useless fellow to an educated and American born Latha. So angrily and decidedly scolds Raja that he will not give a penny from his property, all will be Ramesh's only.
So Raja moves out. Ramesh was amused that he knows Raja loves Latha more than him, and he wanted to know the reason for is disagree. So he followed him and asked the reason. For which Raja replied, that he knew Latha loves Ramesh only. But Ramesh asked again to Raja, if could have hidden the message and married her. But Raja explained love should be from both than one. so with this reply Ramesh was very much impressed and astonished with his own brother's character, and finds himself guilty of him, treating his big brother very nasty all these days and cries a lot and fells on his feet and leaves.
Next Latha comes and asks the reason why he neglected her. He told the same thing and also tells" if anyone gets interest and affection on one, learns much more of them. So Latha thanks Raja very much and takes leave.
Meanwhile, M.N.Nambiar, wants to scold Raja with anger and follows him and was watching all the things going. He was really stunned and feels pity for Raja and falls on love for him. He tries to speak with this grandson about his greatness, which is above godliness. But Raja stops his speech and tells that the real god is his grandfather M.N.Nambiar. M.N.Nambiar breaks to cry, for his activities on his grandson Raja.
From on that day, M.N.Nambiar goes to temple daily and prays in name of his first grandson Raja instead of Ramesh. Also he talks highly about his first grandson everywhere. He encourages his first grandson on the activities. (On which he hated Raja from the starting).

Soundtrack
Sirpi introduced singer Ganga through the album for the film, opting to retain her rough copy track for a song initially meant to be sung by Sujatha Mohan.[1]

Release
The film opened in May 2002 to positive reviews, with a critic from The Hindu noting it was "a neat family drama that is not completely crisp".[2] The film won two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, one for Best Lyricist and one for Best Male Singer.[3]
