Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), also known as Udusok and formerly University of Sokoto is one of the initial twelve federal universities in Nigeria founded in 1975. It is located in the ancient city of Sokoto.
The university is named after Usman Dan Fodio, the founder of the Sokoto Caliphate.
Academics
Udusok is a four-year degree-awarding institution that also features associate degrees and remedial programs (pre-degree). The university has a large and accredited medical program and the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital — popularly known as UDUTH, which is one of the largest hospitals in Nigeria and West Africa. It is mostly accessible to those of low income and, like most Nigerian hospitals, it does not require health insurance before treatment.
The Main Campus or "permanent site" houses most of the university faculties: Agriculture, Arts & Languages, Education, Engineering, Law, Sciences, Social Sciences, and research facilities. The main university senate, the main library complex (Abdullahi Fodiyo Library Complex) and the School of Postgraduate Studies are all located at the Main Campus which also hosts the University Primary and Secondary Schools.
The City Campus hosts the Veterinary Teaching Hospital with Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the Centre for Islamic Studies, and the School of Matriculation Studies where students opting for Remedial Studies (a one-year pre-degree programme for candidates who could not gain admission through UTME which is being conducted by JAMB) are admitted and taught before enrolling into the university. The Remedial Studies are only conducted for courses related to natural science.
A third site in the suburban area houses the university teaching hospital. Within the structure of the hospital is the College of Health Sciences (medicine & surgery/MBBS), College of Medical Laboratory Science/Technology and Radiography (MLS & radiology), School of Nursing Science (BScN/midwifery) and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The university is one of the highest ranking in northern Nigeria due to its high moral stand, academic excellence and its ability to resist the prevalent ASUU strike actions that bedevil Nigerian government universities.
Student life
Usmanu Danfodiyo University has several student unions which include the Students Union and National Association of Science Students (NASS), department associations as well state associations like NAKATSS, SOSSA, NAKESS, ZAMSSA NAISS and NUASS for Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara,Imo and Anambra state students, respectively.
