ABA profile University of La Verne College of Law

The University of La Verne College of Law is a private, ABA-approved law school in Ontario, California. Founded in 1970, it is part of the University of La Verne and is the only ABA-approved law school in the Inland Empire.

History

In 2001, the law school established a new campus in downtown Ontario. It is near the Ontario Civic Center and the city library.

It is not a member of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS), but has paid a fee to receive AALS services.[5]

Academic profile

Degrees offered

The school offers the Juris Doctor (JD) law degree. This requires 88 credits which can be done on a full-time basis over 3 years or on a part-time basis over 4 years.

The school also offers two dual degree programs in conjunction with the University of La Verne College of Business and Public Management, the Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration (JD/MBA) and Juris Doctor/Master of Public Administration (JD/MPA).

Accreditation and ABA approval

On August 29, 2011, the school announced it received accreditation from the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California.[6]

The College of Law first received provisional approval by the American Bar Association in 2006.[7] Full approval was denied by the ABA in June 2011, as the first-time bar pass rate had not improved sufficiently.[8] In March 2012, the ABA again granted provisional approval through 2017 following an extensive review of the law school’s program of legal education, faculty, admissions and student services, facilities and bar pass rate.[9][10]

On March 14, 2016, The University of La Verne College of Law received full accreditation from the American Bar Association.[11]

Rankings

The school is "unranked" in the U.S. News & World Report, "Best Law Schools" report.[2]

In The National Jurist: The Magazine for Law Students, La Verne Law was listed with a "B+" in the March 2011 "Diversity Honor Roll".[12]

Law reviews, journals and publications

The college of law opened a disability rights legal clinic in the Summer of 2007; it then opened a justice and immigration legal clinic.[13] Additional programs for students include clinical externships and practicums in Family Law and Lawyering Skills.[14]

Student loans

The average Class of 2009 graduate had $101,237 of student loan debt.[15]

Effective for the 2014-2015 academic year, La Verne College of Law tuition is $25,000 per year for all full-time students, and $19,600 per year for part-time students.[16] This rate is fixed for all three years of full-time students’ legal education, or all four years of part-time students’ education, with a provision for performance-based, outside-funded scholarships in the latter years.[16]

The total cost of attendance (indicating the cost of tuition, fees, and living expenses) at La Verne for the 2013-2014 academic year was $67,549.[17] For the 2013-2014 academic year, Law School Transparency estimated debt-financed cost of attendance for three years is $204,612.[18]
