The 1968 United States presidential election in Oklahoma took place on November 5, 1968. All fifty states and the District of Columbia were part of the 1968 United States presidential election. Oklahoma voters chose eight electors to the Electoral College, which selected the President and Vice President of the United States.

Former Vice President Richard Nixon, the Republican nominee, won the state with 449,697 votes and 47.68 percent of the vote, with Vice President Hubert Humphrey, the Democratic nominee, taking 301,658 votes and 31.99 percent of the vote, followed by American Independent George Wallace, who took 191,731 votes and 20.33 percent of the vote.[1] Wallace’s performance is the best ever by a third-party candidate in the Sooner State, and his pluralities in Atoka and Pushmataha Counties in the southeast are the only occasion a third-party candidate has ever carried any Oklahoma county.

Notes

  1. Although he was born in California and he served as a U.S. Senator from California, in 1968 Richard Nixon's official state of residence was New York, because he moved there to practice law after his defeat in the 1962 California gubernatorial election. During his first term as president, Nixon re-established his residency in California. Consequently, most reliable reference books list Nixon's home state as New York in the 1968 election and his home state as California in the 1972 (and 1960) election.
