Ulundurpet is a panchayat town in Villupuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is in the Ulundurpet state assembly constituency for Tamil Nadu, and is the taluk headquarters for Ulundurpet taluka in the southern region of Viluppuram District, and is in Ulundurpet revenue block. Close to the Cuddalore District border, this prominent town is at the intersection of NH 68 and NH 45 between Chennai and Trichy. The town of Viluppuram is 35 km by road to the northeast.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] the town of Ulundurpet had a population of 19,251. Males constituted 50% of the population and females 50%. Ulundurpet had an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy was 79%, and female literacy was 63%. As of 2001 in Ulundurpet, 12% of the population was under 6 years of age.

Spiritual Centers

Sri Sarada Ashram is located conveniently on the Chennai-Tiruchirapalli highway(NH 45). It is a traditional spiritual center that undertakes educational, agricultural, rural development, natural resource management, health and emergency relief activities. The ashram is managed by ascetic sisters, the disciples of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. Special prayers are conducted annually and lots of people from various parts of the world visit here. Sri Ramakrishna Gurukulam, a residential matriculation school works under the management of the ashram. The ashram also renders its helping hand to the miserable and suffering class. Vocational training programs are given for rural women. Mobile health services and free hostel facilities for poor girls are offered. This Ashram runs old age home for women as well.[2]

Sri Sankaralinga Ashramam.

Sri Sankaralinga swamigal was one of great saint who stayed and attained samadhi in Uluundurpet. Nobody knows about his early life period.He produced lot of miracles to his devotees.He attained samaidhi on Anusha star (Tamil month Aani).Every year Guru Pooja is conducted on that day.Ashram is run by devotees. Annadhana is provided three times a day.Five times Pooja is carried on daily. Special occasion will be full moon day and new moon day.

There are many caves where saints had stayed to make penance. Inscriptions from the 9th to the 16th centuries are also found here. Every year, a fair is held from the tenth to the fifteenth day of the bright half of the month of Vaisakha. Ulundurpet railway station is the nearest railway station.

The Periyanayagi Madha shrine is a famous Roman Catholic Church in Konankuppam, Tamil Nadu constructed by Fr.Constanzo Beschi also called as Veeramamunivar. There is a life size statue of Fr. Beschi in the front of the church.

From Chennai, it is about 200 km to reach Ulundurpet which is in the Chennai - Trichy highway. Konankuppam is about 12 km from Ulundurpet via Mangalampet. It takes about 10 minutes journey to reach Mangalampet which is in Ulundurpet - Virudhachalam road.

Climate

The temperature is moderate; the maximum and minimum temperatures being 38 °C and 21 °C respectively. The town gets its rainfall from the northeast monsoon in winter and the southwest monsoon in summer. The average annual rainfall is 1070 mm.

The town is well connected by NH 45 (Chennai - Theni). and NH 68 (Ulundurpettai - Salem). The Construction of 4-lane roads in NH 45 completed in the year 2007.

Few years ago, Ulundurpet was one of the heavily traffic areas in Tamil Nadu. Traffic,especially in rainy days, was the major problem near Ulundurpet railway crossing and near bus stand. To reduce this traffic, NHAI constructed bypass roads .Because of bypass roads, it is very easy to reach the major destinations quickly than before. Many Lorry drivers and bus drivers appreciated this bypass construction.

One of the state highways in Ulundurpet is SH-69-(Virudhachalam-Ulundurpet).

Bus Stand

Ulundurpet has a bus stand, which is used by TNSTC and private operators. This is situated inside the town on Chennai-Trichy main road (NH 45). Auto stand, Taxi Stand, Van Stand are also situated near bus stand.

TNSTC Villupuram buses plays a major role in this town. Another major bus services are TNSTC Trichy, TNSTC Salem & SETC.

For every 6-10 mins in the peak hours, buses are frequently available to the places like Virudhachalam, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Trichy, Chennai and Salem. It is the major advantage of this town.

The Airstrip at Ulundurpet was built during world war Two and was used for a short while as a hopping point during aerial spraying operations conducted quite a few years back. Presently used for food storage.
