Biography

Gang Chung was a son of Gang Ho-gyeong who was the 67th descendant of Gang Hou. Gang Hou was the second child of Gang Shu who was from Zingzhao country, Shangxi province in China.[3][4][5] He had three children named as I-Jegeon, Bo-Seung and Gang Bo Yuk. Gang Bo Yuk married with his niece Gang Deju and their daughter Gang Sin-ui was born. Gang Sin-ui married with Chinese man and King Uijo of Goryeo was born. The father of King Uijo was royal family from Tang dynasty, China.[6] According to Pyeonnyeon-Tong-Long (ko:편년통록) and Goryeosa jeolyo (ko:고려사절요), he was Emperor Suzong of Tang. In Pyeonnyeongangmog (변년강목/編年綱目), Emperor Xuānzong of Tang was father of King Uijo.[7][8] When his father visited Silla, King Uijo of Goryeo was born between his Chinese father and Gang Sin-ui who was a daughter of Gang Bo Yuk. On the way of finding his father to China, King Uijo met Queen Wonchang and get married with her. According to Record of Seongwon (성원녹/聖源録), Queen Wonchang was a daughter of Tou En Dian Jiao Gan from Ping state (zh:平州刺史部), China.[9] Queen Wonchang gave birth of a boy. His name was Wang Ryung and his son was the founder of Goryeo, Taejo of Goryeo.[10][11]

According to Goryeosa and Goryeosa jeolyo, Gang Bo Yuk built wooden hermitage at cape Maga (마가갑/摩訶岬) and lived there. One day, a diviner from Silla visited him and told him “If you stay here, one day a prince of Tang dynasty visit you and he will be your son in law.” This prophecy was fulfilled. One day, Emperor Suzong of Tang, carried great treasures to visit whole Goryeo. He stopped by Songag (송악/松嶽) County and made a prediction that this place will be a capital city in the future. After that Emperor Suzong stayed at Gang Bo Yuk’s house. He liked Gang Bo Yuk’s daughter Gang Sin-ui. Emperor Suzong stayed at Gang Bo Yuk’s house for about a month and Gang Sin-ui got pregnant. He told her “If you gave a birth of boy, name as Wang Yung.” Emperor Suzong gave her a bow and an arrow, and left her a message. “When a boy get older, visit me to Tang dynasty with this bow and arrow as an evidence of my son.”[12]

According to Goryeosa, when Chungseon of Goryeo stayed in Yuan dynasty as a prince, one of the student from Hanlin Academy asked his “As I heard, your ancestor is Emperor Suzong of Tang, where is the story came out? In fact, Emperor Suzong seldom go outside of palace. Also during An Lushan Rebellion, he ascend the throne at Lingwu. How can he manage his time to visit your country and have child?” For this question, Minji (ko:민지 (고려)) gave opinion in place of Chungseon of Goryeo. “It’s a wrong story. It was not Emperor of Suzong, it was Emperor Xuānzong of Tang.” Student of Hanlin Academy consented to this story and said “Emperor Xuangzong of Tang stayed outside of palace for long time, it should be him.”[13][14]

According to Choe Wansu(최완수), a general manager of Gansong Art Museum, those theories have strong narrative elements. He reinterpreted reasonably and reorganize the situation at that time. In his theory, ancestral family of King Uijo of Goryeo was one of wealthy merchants in Kaesong. They made direct trade with Chinese merchants and built huge wealth. Therefore, father of King Uijo of Goryeo who interpreted as the royal family of Tang dynasty was actually Chinese merchant who visited Kaesong for commercial transactions. So, King Uijo of Goryeo was a child who born between Chinese merchant and Gang Sin-ui. In Goryeosa and Goryeosa jeolyo, Emperor Suzong of Tang is father of King Uijo of Goryeo, however, it was probably just an estimation from Goryeo side. In any cases, it is certain that King Uijo of Goryeo was a son of Chinese merchant and at Songag County, there are lots of Chinese merchants visited for their business. In addition, King Uijo of Goryeo tried to find his father and visited Tang with merchant vessel when he was 16. It can be reinterpreted as above.[15]

According to Go Ungi (고운기/高雲基), a professor of Yonsei University, father of King Uijo of Goryeo came from Silla and got married to a women in Goryeo, Gang Sin-ui. King Uijo of Goeyo get married with a daughter of dragon in Xihai (西海) and she gave birth for Sejo of Goryeo who is father of Taejo. If we see “Dragon” as some kind of symbol of Chinese, Family line of Taejo of Goryeo should be almost Chinese, even if we examine from his great grandfather, Taejo of Goryeo is definitely a third generation of Chinese.[16]

Episode

As explained above, King Uijo of Goryeo have Chinese origin. In Korean drama, “Taejo Wang Geon”, there is a scene Sejo of Goryeo tells his son, Taejo “Our ancestor came from Tang dynasty to Silla with Jang Bogo.”[17]
