Udo Cordes (22 July 1921 – 7 March 2007) was a highly decorated Oberleutnant in the Luftwaffe during World War II, and a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership.
Cordes was a member of 9 Eisenbahnstaffeln (Train-hunting Squadron), under the command of Kampfgeschwader 3. Aufkälrungsgruppe 100 (Long-range reconnaissance) located the targets for the staffel. Small groups, even single crews, then took off on a strike mission to destroy the train. Cordes' tactics enabled him to destroy 41 locomotives and 19 Armoured trains in only three weeks of action. Along with Herbert Roewer and Ernst Fach, Cordes was among the most successful train-buster pilots of the war.[1]
