Trivandrum International Stadium or Greenfield Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Kerala, used mainly for association football and cricket. The stadium is located at Kariavattom in Thiruvananthapuram city, Kerala, India.[4] It is India's first DBOT (design, build, operate and transfer) model outdoor stadium.

Facilities


The ground is designed such that it can be used for international games of cricket and football. The playing arena in the stadium has been constructed in line with FIFA regulations and International Cricket Council norms.

It has facilities for indoor sports like table tennis, basketball, badminton etc., a gymnasium and spa, a club house with five star facilities, tennis court, Olympic size swimming pool, open convention cum trade cum exhibition centre, retail outlets, food courts, club facilities, car parking, etc.[5] It has a seating capacity for 55,000 spectators.

This multi-functional stadium will be capable of hosting international cricket and football matches as well as cultural and entertainment events. Open Parking for 2000 cars is also available. A new road has been constructed from Kariavattom National Highway to the stadium.[4]

Project details

It is the first stadium in the country coming up on DBOT (Design-Build- Operate and Transfer) basis. It is also the first stadium in the country to be developed on annuity mode.Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited (IL&FS) had won the bid with the lowest NPV(Net Present Value) quote for Rs.141.19Cr.

IL&FS has formed a special purpose vehicle, Kariavattom Sports Facilities Limited (KSFL), for the construction of the stadium. The total land in the layout is 37 acres. The concession period is for 15 years including construction period of 2 years from the commencement date.

Annuity payments shall be made on an annual basis by National Games Secretariat (NGS), over 13 structured annuities.The entire project is expected to be completed prior to the scheduled Commercial Operation Date (COD) of December 18, 2014.The estimated project cost is Rs. 240 cr.[6] The stadium has witnessed the opening of the 35th National Games of India.[7]

The Stadium Business Summit Manchester 2013 closing session showcased a range of new stadium investment projects. THE IL&FS KERALA STADIUM also participated in the stadium business summit 2013[8] closing session.

The Stadium Consultancy (TSC)[9] is an independent consultancy company which signed a contract to execute a design audit,[10] as well as the transportation systems etc. of the stadium. The stadium was designed by Collage Design of Mumbai.[11]



Football

The first international football tournament hosted by the stadium was the 2015 SAFF championship. India were crowned the champions, beating Afghanistan 2-1. The final recorded an attendance of more than 42,000 spectators.

Cricket

On May 27, 2016, it was announced that the Kerala Cricket Association will be taking over the stadium for a stipulated period of time to enable the hosting of cricket matches allotted to the Kerala Cricket Association after the KCA reached an agreement with the Kariavattom Sports Facilities Limited (KSFL) who owns the stadium. Furthermore, because of the reputation of the stadium the KCA president is also optimistic about hosting a few IPL matches here as well. Such an agreement was finalized in order to make up for the unavailability of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi as result of the FIFA U-17 World Cup matches being scheduled there.[12] Zimbabwe is scheduled to play test match against India in March 2019.

The Important Landmarks near the stadium is Technopark Trivandrum, Kinfra Film and Video Park, Magic Planet, College of Engineering Trivandrum, Laksmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE),Kerala Highway Research Institute (KHRI), University of Kerala Kariavattom Campus, University College of Engineering Kariavattom, Kochuveli railway station, Kinfra Apparel Park, Technocity, Thiruvananthapuram.The distance of the stadium from Trivandrum International Airport is 10 km, Trivandrum Central Railway station is 12 km, Central Bus Station Thiruvananthapuram Thampanoor is 11.8 km and to the world-famous Kovalam beach is 25 km. The proposed Thiruvananthapuram Light Metro has a Station at Kariavattom. Another major town in Kerala, Attingal is at a distance of 14 km from the stadium.

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) reached between the National Games Secretariat (NGS) and the Kerala University about the lease of the land of Kerala University. [7] [13] [14]
