Trident University International (Trident) is a regionally accredited, private for-profit university that was founded on the belief that a high quality, traditional educational experience could be delivered 100% online. It offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degree programs in business, health sciences, education, and information systems (information technology). Formerly a branch of Touro College, TUI is now a standalone institution since being purchased by Summit Partners in 2007.
Overall, Trident offers 7 bachelor’s degrees, 9 master's degrees and 4 doctoral degree[1] programs. During[2] the FY 2015 report year, Trident University reported a six-year graduation rate of 46% for first-time students and 61% for all Trident undergraduate students.
Trident is a military friendly university and enrollment as of 2014 was about 75% military.[3] Trident has been officially recognized by Military Times as “Best for Vets," five times by Victory Media’s Military Friendly Schools including in 2016[4] and 2017.[5] Trident is also listed by Military Advanced Education & Transition Top Colleges and Universities for both 2015 and 2016.[6]
History
Founding
Trident University International is a regionally-accredited college that operates entirely online. Founded in 1998, it has its headquarters in Cypress, California. Currently the university has more than 30,000 alumni [7].
Originally called Touro University International, the University was a former branch campus of Touro College, New York. In October 2007, Trident became a stand-alone institution when it was purchased by Summit Partners, a private-equity firm in Palo Alto, California, and Boston, Massachusetts. After purchasing the university, Summit Partners reorganized TUI and changed the name to TUI University.
Recent History
In January 2011, TUI University announced major changes in its appearance and delivery, including a name change to Trident University International.[8]
In June 2015, Travis Allen was named President & CEO. He has previously held senior management roles at Argosy University, University of Phoenix, and Endeavour Learning Group based in Melbourne, Australia.
As of September 2015, Trident has 6,197 students many of whom are either military veterans or active duty service members. The University had more than 28,000 alumni,[9] including more than 22,000[10] alumni who are active duty military, spouses, dependents, National Guard, or veterans.[11]
Trident's rating with the Better Business Bureau stands at an A+.[12]
In May 2017, Dr. Debra Louis was named Dean of Trident University's Glenn R. Jones College of Business.[13]
Academics
TUI is a research-based institution and is regionally accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).[14] Classes and coursework are 100% online.
Trident’s programs are primarily focused around the Trident Learning Model (TLM), which promotes active case-based learning. The model is built on a strong foundation of student success through the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Trident’s learning outcomes include a solid foundation of the common body of knowledge, communication, problem solving, information literacy, critical thinking, diversity, and integrity.

In addition to the 20 degree programs, a 16 credit Graduate certificate is available in specific areas to anyone holding a bachelor's degree.

Students
The student body of Trident is made up of a large number of veterans and active service members. In 2014, 2,202 students were receiving benefits from the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and 7,233 students were using the DoD Tuition Assistance Program.[20]
Faculty
In total, Trident has 394 faculty members. Most are part-time (353) with 41 working at Trident in a full-time capacity. The student to teacher ratio is 17:1. Over 80% of faculty have a doctoral degree or the highest available degree in their field.
