The P'yŏngra Line is an electrified standard-gauge trunk line of the North Korean State Railway running from P'yŏngyang to Rajin, where it connects with the Hambuk Line, as well as the Hongui Line that runs to Khasan, Russia.[1] It is North Korea's main northeast-southwest rail line.

History

P'yŏngwon Line

Hamgyŏng Line

The 12.4 km (7.7 mi) section from Kowŏn to Kŭmya was originally opened by the Chosen Government Railway on 21 July 1916 as part of its Hamgyŏng Line.

Ch'ŏngra Line

The line was a standard gauge rail line of 'the Government Railways of Chosun (朝鮮総督府鉄道)' which ran from Ch'ŏngjin to Rajin. On 1 February 1945 the first section Ch'ongjin–Ch'ongam (Kŭmbawi) was opened,[2] however the open of the rest section could not be realized until the end of the Second World War.

After the end of the Korean War the line was constructed with the support of People's Republic of China and Soviet Union. On 10 June 1965 the construction of the line was finished with the electrification.

The above three line were integrated into a new line with the present name. With the construction of the new section Kalli–Paesanjŏm Ryongsŏng Line was separated from the former P'yŏngwon Line. In 1993 the construction of the bypass was complete between Puraesan and Kowon.[3]
