Thomas George "Tommy" Smith (born 14 April 1992) is a professional footballer who plays for Premier League club Huddersfield Town as a defender.

Playing career

Born in Warrington, Cheshire, Smith originally joined the Manchester City F.C. Reserves and Academy, before leaving in 2012, and joining the Huddersfield Town A.F.C. Reserves and Academy.

His first foray into the Town first team was when he appeared on the bench in Town's 2–1 defeat against Barnsley on 31 August 2013. He made his début for the Terriers in the Football League Cup game against Hull City at the KC Stadium on 24 September 2013. He made his first league start for the Terriers in the 2–1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough Stadium on 23 November 2013.

On 4 February 2014, Smith renewed his contract with Huddersfield Town, which will keep him at the club until 2016.[3]

On 31 January 2015, Smith was airlifted to hospital with severe head trauma after colliding with the Huddersfield goalkeeper, Joe Murphy.[4] He was treated for 9 minutes before being given oxygen and stretched the pitch. After the game, an air ambulance landed on the pitch and airlifted him to Leeds General Infirmary.

His first goal for the Terriers came in their 5–2 FA Cup defeat against Reading at the Madejski Stadium on 19 January 2016.[5]

Tommy Smith's second goal for the Terriers was scored on 19 November 2016, in their 3–2 defeat against Cardiff City at the Cardiff City stadium in the Sky BET EFL Championship 16–17 season.

On 9 August 2017, Smith was appointed as the Huddersfield Town club captain ahead of the 2017–18 season, following Mark Hudson's retirement.
