Timothée Chalamet (/ˈtɪməθi ˈʃæləm/; born December 26, 1995) is an American stage and film actor. He is known for his work in the series Homeland and the film Interstellar. In 2017, he will star in the critically acclaimed film Call Me by Your Name.

Early life and education

Chalamet was born and raised in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan,[1] the son of Nicole Flender, a Yale-graduated dancer, and Marc Chalamet. He has an older sister.[2] Chalamet's uncle is Harvard-educated director Rodman Flender; his aunt is television producer and writer Amy Lippman; and his maternal grandfather was screenwriter Harold Flender.[3][4] His father is French and his mother is American (of half Russian Jewish and half Austrian Jewish descent).[5][6] He graduated from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in New York City, and attended Columbia University for a year before transferring to New York University in order to more freely pursue his acting career.[7]

Career

2008–2013: Television and stage work

Chamalet started his acting career in two short films before making his small screen debut on an episode of Law & Order, which he followed with a small role in the television film Loving Leah (2009). In 2011, he made his stage debut in the Off-Broadway play The Talls, for which he received positive reviews. [8][9]

In 2012, he had recurring roles in the drama series Royal Pains and in the critically acclaimed television series Homeland, where he played Finn Walden, the son of the Vice President of the United States. Chalamet received a nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for his performance, along with the cast. [10] [11] In 2013, he starred in Craig Gillespie's television pilot called Trooper.

2014–2016: Film and stage work

In 2014, he made his feature film debut in a small role in Jason Reitman's Men, Women & Children. Later that year, Chalamet co-starred as the 15 year old Tom Cooper in Christopher Nolan's science fiction film Interstellar.[12] Between the years 2014 and 2015, Chalamet appeared in the films One & Two, Worst Friends, The Adderall Diaries and Love the Coopers, all of which received mixed reviews.[13] [14][15][16]

In early 2016, he starred as Jim Rogan in playwright and director John Patrick Shanley's semi-autobiographical play Prodigal Son at the Manhattan Theatre Club. For his performance, Chalamet received rave reviews [17][18] and won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play. [19] He later co-starred in the independent film Miss Stevens (2016), for which he received positive reviews from critics.[20]

2017–present: Breakthrough

On May 23, 2016 it was announced that Chalamet would lead the film adaptation of Call Me by Your Name by author André Aciman.[21] For his role as Elio Perlman, Chalamet spent months preparing learning to speak Italian and playing the guitar and the piano. [22] Directed by Italian director Luca Guadagnino, Call Me by Your Name had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2017 where Chalamet received rave reviews. [23][24] It will be released in cinemas in the United States on November 24, 2017.[25]

As of August 2017, Chalamet has five upcoming projects. He will be featured as Daniel in the drama Hot Summer Nights, and will play Philippe DeJardin in Scott Cooper's Hostiles and one of Saoirse Ronan's love interests in Greta Gerwig's directorial debut Lady Bird; the latter two will both have their world premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2017.[26][27] He will portray Nic Sheff , a boy addicted to methamphetamine based on the memoir Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction by David Sheff, whom will be portrayed by Steve Carell.[28] Chalamet will also co-star in an upcoming untitled Woody Allen film. [29]

Personal life

Chalamet lives in New York. He is fluent in French. [30] He previously dated Lourdes Leon.[31]
