The following is a timeline of the island of São Nicolau, Cape Verde.
Prehistoric and precolonial era
- 131 to 126 million years ago - The seamount formed
- 11.8 to 5.8 million years ago - The island was formed during the Tortonian and Messinian eras[1]
- 6.2 to 5.8 million years ago - The middle part of the island's formation formed during the Messinian era
- 1.7 to 1.5 million years ago - The lower part of the Monte Gordo Formation formed[2]
- 100,000 to 50,000 years ago - The upper part of the Monte Gordo Formation formed[2]
- 1920 BC - August 25: A total solar eclipse took place in the island
- 1776 BC - November 19: A total solar eclipse took place in the morning in the island
- 1399 BC - August 24: A total solar eclipse took place in the late morning hours in the island
- 1312 BC - June 25: A total solar eclipse took place in the mid morning hours in the island, this was one of two that could be Mursili's eclipse, the only one that included the archipelago
- 962 BC - February 27: An annular solar eclipse took place in the island
- 618 BC - March 6:, an annular solar eclipse was seen in the island
- 1207 - March 7: An annular solar eclipse probably took place in the island
- 1308 - September 24: An annular solar eclipse took place in the island
Colonial era
- 1461: December 6 - The island first discovered
- 16th century - The island first inhabited
- 17th century: Ribeira Brava founded
- Late-18th century: Nossa Senhora do Rosário church built
- 1810 - Forte do Príncipe Real built to protect against pirate raids
- 1832 - Population: around 5,000[3]
- 1866 - Seminário-Liceu de São José, the sland's first seminary opened
- 1875 - A species of wall geckos Tarentola gigas (the Giant Cape Verde wall gecko) were named and described by José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage
- 1891 - A lighthouse at Ponta do Barril built
- 1890 - Population:12 425
- 1898 - May 5: A new basilica in Ribeira Brava was built
- 1930 - Population: 10 753
- 1930s - Economic crisis started mainly after the Great Depression
- 1940 - Population: 14 846[4]
- 1940s - Famines struck the island which led the emigration to São Tomé and Príncipe and the island of Sal
- 1950 - Population: 10 386[4]
- 1960 - Population: 13 866[4]
- 1965 - August 28: FC Ultramarina football (soccer) club established
- 1970 - Population: 16 308[4] - the highest population reached
- 1974 - April: the Carnation Revolution took place in Portugal, the Estado Novo regime collapsed, Cape Verde became an autonomous province
After independence in 1975-1999
- 1975 - July 5: Cape Verde declared independence from Portugal and became and independent nation
- 1976 - Fajã Gallery (Galeria de Fajã) opened under a Franco-Cape Verdean cooperation.
- 1977 - December 9: SC Atlético football (soccer) club established
- 1980 - Population: 13 572[4]
- 1985 - A species of wall geckos the São Nicolau wall gecko were named and described as a subspecies of Tarentola caboverdiana by Hans Hermann Schleich in 1984, since 2012, they are Tarentola nicolauensis
- 1986 - São Nicolau Island Championships held its first edition
- 1990 - Population: 13 665[4]
- 1991 - The island's port at Tarrafal de São Nicolau expanded and completed and started to be used for auto ferries and shipping[5]
- 1998:
- February: Some individuals of the Cape Verde warbler (Acrocephalis brevipennis) were founded on the island after a survey[6]
- July 19: FC Praia Branca football (soccer) club established
21st century
- 2000 - Population: 13 661[7]
- 2001 - The São Nicolau Cup, the Super Cup and the Opening Tournament held their first editions
- 2003
- AJAT'SN football (soccer) club competed at the regioinal championships for the first time
- February 24: Monte Gordo Natural Park established
- 2004 - Last municipal elections before the break up of the municipality into two
- 2005
- The Municipality of São Nicolau broken into the municipalities of Ribeira Brava and Tarrafal de São Nicolau
- September 15: Forte do Príncipe Real underwent restoration works[8]
- 2010
- Population: 13 074[9]
- 12 October: Estádio Orlando Rodrigues opened its doors in Tarrafal[10]
- 2013 - A new terminal which replaced the older terminal at the island's airport
- 2015 - Hurricane Fred struck the village of Carriçal[11]
- 2016 - November 14: Small ship le Ponant visited the island
