TiVi5 Monde (French pronunciation: [ti vi sɛ̃k mɔ̃d]), stylized as TiVi5 MONDE, is a television channel launched at the end of January 2012[1] by the Francophone channel TV5 Monde, which is aimed mainly to French-speaking African children (4–13 years).[2] The objective of the channel is to teach French to young children through dedicated programs.[2]

History

2012: American launch

Tivi5Monde is the first American channel and the only one to date targeting only children with a 24/7 program entirely in French. This new channel is available on Dish Network and is part of the "Bouquet français" offering TV5 Monde.[1]

2016: African launch

On June 11, 2016, TiVi5 Monde, the TV5 Monde channel dedicated to children, is launched in Africa. Already broadcast in the United States since 2012, it is now hosting African productions and broadcasting in some forty countries over Africa.[2][3]

While TV5 Monde targets adults, TiVi5 Monde targets children. "In order to children choose French, it is necessary to support this language in Africa", explains Yves Bigot, CEO of TV5 Monde.[2][3]

The channel started broadcasting free-to-air on the SES4 satellite and is made accessible on channel 274 of Canalsat Horizons. It is sponsored by Dominique Ouattara, first lady of Côte d'Ivoire and president of the Children of Africa Foundation.[2][3]

The content already offered by TiVi5 Monde to young Americans since 2012 has not changed, with only one difference: 12% of the productions broadcast are African.[2][3]

The channel had however to be satisfied with a modest budget. The initially announced amount of 1.4 million euros has been revised downwards as several expected financings have not arrived. It is therefore necessary to find a rational economic model :[2] the channel's responsibles decided to pool TiVi5 Monde Afrique with that already active in the United States. The same programs are broadcast on both continents.[3]

Programing

TiVi5 Monde airs educational programs, cartoons, children's series and games. Starting 2012, 12% of the productions broadcast in the channel are African. All the programs are 100% French-speaking; the channel doesn't make any French dubbing of American series.[2][3] Its programs both playful and educational are broadcast without advertising.[1]
