Thiruppuvanam is a panchayat town, in Manamadurai Taluk, Sivaganga district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.[1][2][3]

Location

Thiruppuvanam is situated nearby the Temple city of Madurai. It is on Madurai-Rameswaram National Highway and 18 km to the east of Madurai,20 km west of Manamadurai.situated on the southern banks of river Vaigai.Thiruppuvanam is fall under Manamadurai assembly.

Ancient history and mythology

Before the 7th century AD in Tamil Nadu, Jainism and Buddhism were the dominated religions. During that period the four great Saivaite saints restored the pristine glory of Saivism. They traveled far and wide in the Tamil kingdoms, extolling and singing the glory of God. There are 14 Shrines in the Pandya kingdom where their songs are available. These 14 Shrines in the area known as Pandi-14. Amongst the 14 Shrines, Madurai, the Capital of the Pandiya Kingdom is the most ancient. But the city was ravaged due to the war of Lord Indra, the curse of Kannagi, which consumed Madurai, and the spate in the river Vaigai. Though the city was brought back to life again, the only Shrine which maintains its ancient glory is Thirupuvanam.

It is said that Goddess Parvati, to expiate from her sin, sat under the Parijatha Tree for Penance.

The glories of the Thiruppuvanam are narrated in Brahma-vaivarta puranam ( Sanskrit). And it was translated in the Tamil Language and named as "Thiruppuvanam Puranam" by Kandasamy Pulavar.

More over the glories of Thirupuvanam are narrated in 3 episodes in Thiruvillaiyadar Puranam of Paranjothi Munivar. Thiruppuvanam is also known as 'Nelmudikarai'.

Divine Worship Church

Divine worship church is located here. Its founder R.Justin Jeyachandran established a church in Indra Nagar near Thirupuvanam Railway Station. His son Pr.J.Jebaraj is currently building a church in Pazhaiyur and is about to inaugurate within September, 2017. He is about to create history in establishing churches in Thirupuvanam.

Thiruppuvanam is a First grade town panchayat in Sivagangai district.

Transport

By road, Thiruppuvanam is at 18 km from Madurai, 25 km from Sivaganga, 27 km from Manamadurai, 40 km from Ilayankudi and Kariapatti. The town straddles the national highway NH49 (Kochi-Madurai–Rameswaram). It is well connected by roads to the nearby towns and villages. It has rail links to Madurai, Manamadurai and to Rameswaram. The Madurai International Airport is 25 km from the town.

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation operates buses around Thiruppuvanam and the town comes under the operational Area of TNSTC-Karaikudi Region but Hosts a Madurai Region Depot due to closeness to Madurai. Most of 32 series towns of Madurai belong to Thiruppuvanam depot of Madurai region

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,[4] Thiruppuvanam had a population of 21,435. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Thiruppuvanam has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 66%.

Somasundaram Swamy Jeeva Samathi

It is situated in near of sunnambu kalavasal, opposite to union office. These type of Jeeva Samathi are not found elsewhere in Sivagangai dist. The great "Somasundaram" swamy lived in the 17th century; he was born in Thiruppuvanam.
