The Warning is a rock band from Monterrey, Nuevo León in Mexico. It was formed in 2013 by three young sisters: Daniela, Paulina and Alejandra Villarreal Vélez. The band is managed by Luis Villarreal, the girls' father. They released their debut EP Escape the Mind on April 14, 2015. Their debut studio album XXI Century Blood was released on April 5, 2017. The name of the album (and title track) is a reference to the girls' generation - they say they're "the blood of the 21st Century" because they were born in 2000, 2002 and 2004. The music video for the title track won an award at the Around International Film Festival.[1][2]

Information on the girls' musical training can be found in the "Biography" section of the "About" tab on the band's Facebook page.

Pau is nicknamed "the Shredder" because the floor around her drum kit has to vacuumed after every practice session to clean up the shreds of broken drumsticks.

History

Information about the band's formation and early years can be found in the "Biography" section of the "About" tab on their Facebook page. Below are the known dates of critical events in the band's history; the girls' ages are in parentheses:

  • May - After seeing a challenging drum cover of a Kelly Clarkson song[6] by Cobus Potgieter[7], Pau spends months learning the piece. Luis uploads a video of her version of Cobus' cover, and for the first time titles it for a general audience[8]. The video goes viral.
  • December - As Dany and Pau prepare for their school's Christmas festival, they begin practicing together, then recruit Ale (7 going on 8) to learn bass so they can play as a family trio. The girls make their first public appearance as a band playing an Argent Cover with some of their classmates[9].
  • May - Luis begins uploading practice sessions of the girls playing cover songs[10].
  • unknown - Dany invites some classmates over to the house for a jam session. The three all-boy bands have names, so the girls' decide they also need a name and choose "The Warning", the name for an album of original songs they are planning.
  • December - Now calling themselves The Warning, the girl play a four song mini-concert of covers at their school's Christmas Festival[11].
  • 03-23 - The band makes their first appearance before the general public, and plays covers and originals during a ten song concert. Six videos of their performance were uploaded to YouTube[12].
  • 04-25 - The band plays at the 2015 []Pal_Norte|Festival Pa'l Norte]] in their hometown. One video is uploaded to YouTube[13].
  • 07-13 to 08-16 - The girls attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston for 5 weeks of professional training.
  • 08-19 - The girls join ASCAP during a trip to New York.
  • 08-22 - The band plays a seven song concert at a small outdoor venue as part of the 5th Annual Rock-and-Roll Carnival to Benefit Musack in Anaheim, CA. Videos of their songs are uploaded to YouTube[14].

Notes:
  • This is one of the band's earliest video interviews, recorded just a few days before they play their first concert that includes original songs[12]. They are awkward and unsure in the beginning, but quickly settle down and become animated and funny.
  • Based on comments in the video, the interview date is approximately March 20, 2013.
  • The two-part interview is almost 37 minutes long, and is a comprehesive introduction to the band's early years. The girls discuss the crowdfunding campaign to send them to Berklee, the process of creating original music and writing lyrics that aren't based on their own experiences, the difficulty of singing while playing, their music teachers, how Pau and the band became YouTube celebrities, the origin of the band's name, and the reaction of their classmates. At the end they read "Thank You" notes to their teachers and paying supporters.
  • Some facts not mentioned in later interviews: Dany & Ale both play the saxophone and enjoy drawing. Dany is a voracious reader but Ale hates reading, and Pau reads a lot but hates drawing. All three girls dislike sports because they're afraid of injuring their hands.
