The Snowman is an upcoming British crime thriller horror film directed by Tomas Alfredson and written by Hossein Amini and Peter Straughan, based on the novel of the same name by Jo Nesbø. The film stars Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Val Kilmer and J. K. Simmons. Principal photography began on 18 January 2016 in Norway. The film will be released by Universal Pictures on 20 October 2017.
Premise
When an elite crime squad’s lead detective (Fassbender) investigates the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter, he fears an elusive serial killer may be active again. With the help of a brilliant recruit (Ferguson), the cop must connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new one if he hopes to outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall.[1]

Additionally, Val Kilmer, Sofia Helin and Anne Reid have been cast in undisclosed roles. Jo Nesbø (the writer of the book this film is based on) will have a small cameo.[2]
Production
Pre-production
A film adaptation of the novel The Snowman was developing from British production company Working Title Films. In 2013 Martin Scorsese was attached to direct the film.[3] In 2014, Tomas Alfredson was hired to direct.[4] On 8 September 2015 Michael Fassbender was in talks to join the film for the lead role.[5] On 14 October 2015 Rebecca Ferguson was cast in the film to play the female lead role.[6] Alfredson's Another Park Film would also produce the film, starting production in January 2016.[6] On 16 December 2015 Charlotte Gainsbourg was also in talks to join the cast of the film.[7]
Filming
Principal photography on the film commenced on January 18th 2016 in Oslo, Norway.[8] Fassbender was spotted on set for the first time on January 21 in the Barcode area of Oslo, shooting a scene on the tram.[9] A big scene depicting a party, which required over 300 extras, was shot in Oslo City Hall on February 5th.[10] Production moved to the area of Rjukan on February 9th, and to Bergen on February 23. Filming in Bergen included locations such as the mountain of Ulriken, Bryggen and Skansen firestation. Production moved back to Oslo for the remainder of filming in mid-March. This included scenes at Restaurant Schrøder, where Harry Hole is a regular in the book-series.[11] Scenes were also shot in Drammen and on the Atlantic Ocean Road. Filming ended on April 1st 2016.[12]
Reshoots and additional filming took place in Norway during the spring of 2017.
Marketing
Universal pictures released a poster on 18th of July 2017, and the first trailer for the movie premiered the following day.
Release
The film will open on 20 October 2017 in the United States and on 13 October 2017 in Norway and UK.[13]
