The Silverfern Group, a multi-asset class investment management firm making direct investments in middle market private equity, real estate and private debt globally, was founded in 2001. [1]
Company background
Silverfern invests on behalf of both institutional investors and a network of more than 65 of the world’s largest single-family offices. [2] The firm has a global partnership with Citibank to provide equity investment opportunities to certain of the Citi Private Bank’s largest private clients. Silverfern’s headquarters is in New York City, with additional investment offices in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Frankfurt, Germany, and Sydney, Australia.[3] It is registered with FINRA (U.S.), [4] the SEC (U.S.), ASIC (Australia), and has a Luxembourg-registered Reserved Alternative Investment Fund.[5]
Investment process
In its private equity investments (co-control minority, equity and private equity credit), Silverfern seeks to invest between $25 million and $100 million per investment in partnership with family offices and other institutional investors. In its real estate investments (co-control minority, majority control, equity and real estate credit), Silverfern seeks to invest $15 million to $75 million per investment. In private debt (private equity or real estate), the firm seeks to invest $10 million to $50 million per investment.[3]
Company leaders
Silverfern was founded by Reeta K. Holmes and Clive R. Holmes. Reeta Holmes, Silverfern’s Co-Founder and Co-Managing Partner, was formerly with Soros Fund Management and The Blackstone Group. Clive Holmes is Co-Founder, Co-Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer. He is the former co-head of M&A for Deutsche Bank Securities in New York.[6]
Investments
In January 2017, Silverfern completed the acquisition and take-private of SAI Global, a global risk management solutions provider, in partnership with Baring Private Equity Asia.[7]
In November 2016, Silverfern, in partnership with the Riverside Company, acquired Waste Services Group, a provider of waste management services to the Australian commercial and industrial sectors. [8] [9]
In October 2016, Silverfern, in partnership with Arroyo Energy Investors, acquired Broad River Power Holdings, an 878-megawatt gas turbine electric power plant in Gaffney, South Carolina. [10] In May 2017, Silverfern completed a follow-on investment in Broad River, in what was the firm’s fifth portfolio follow-on investment over an 18-month period. [11]
In June 2016, Silverfern completed two follow-on investments. One in support of the acquisition by Silverfern portfolio company O-Tex Holdings of the cementing assets of the Sanjel Corporation out of bankruptcy. The second was a follow-on in support of the acquisition by Silverfern portfolio company Sequitur Energy Resources of oil and gas reserves in the Permian Basin in West Texas from EOG Resources.[12]
In May 2016, Goldman Sachs Merchant Banking Division and Silverfern acquired Continental Bakeries, the largest European producer and distributor of private label baked goods. The company has approximately 1550 employees at 12 factories in Western Europe and produces more than 2500 different products.[13]
In February 2016, Silverfern invested in the acquisition and take-private of APR Energy Plc in partnership with Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, ACON Investments, Albright Capital Management and members of APR Management. In July 2016, Silverfern completed a follow-on investment in APR, which is a provider of large scale electric power generation solutions.[14]
In January 2016, Silverfern invested in the recapitalization of Tempo River Park Apartments in partnership with the developer, The Wolff Company. Tempo River Park is a 235-unit Class-A apartment community located in Oxnard, California. [15]
