The Palace of Dreams

The Palace of Dreams (Albanian: Pallati i ëndrrave) is a 1981 novel by the Albanian writer Ismail Kadare. It is widely regarded as Kadare's best and most important work.

Background

An except from the novel camouflaged as a short story appeared in 1980, in a "novella" collection titled "Gjakftohtësia" next to Broken April, The Ghost Rider and The Wedding. Due to its seemingly historical nature, it was met with silence by the critics. The following year, in 1981, he smuggled the rest of the novel into the second edition of his prosa collection "Emblema e dikurshme" (Emblem of the past), without catching the eye of the censors who had lowered their vigilance since both the collection and "The Palace of Dreams" had already gotten the green light for publishing before.[1]
