In the United States, The Operational Art of War sold 12,789 copies during 1998. These sales accounted for $555,681 in revenue that year.[2]

The Operational Art of War won Computer Gaming World's award for the best wargame of 1998. The editors wrote, "With its innovative combination of time, movement, and combat action, The Operational Art of War shows that there is still plenty of life left in serious wargames."[1] PC Gamer US also named The Operational Art of War the best wargame of 1998.[2]

The game also won Computer Games Strategy Plus's 1998 "Wargame of the Year" award. The editors wrote that it "balances detail against flexibility; in our minds, it does this better than most."[3]
