The Mountain Between Us is an upcoming American romance-disaster film directed by Hany Abu-Assad and written by Chris Weitz and J. Mills Goodloe, based on the novel of the same name by Charles Martin.[3][4] It stars Idris Elba and Kate Winslet as a surgeon and a journalist, respectively, who survive a plane crash and are stranded in High Uintas Wilderness with injuries and harsh weather conditions.[5] The film will be released by 20th Century Fox on 6 October 2017 in the United States.[6]

Plot

After the cancellation of their flight due to stormy weather, Dr. Ben Bass and photojournalist Alex Martin board a charter plane. The plane crashes midflight and they survive the incident with injuries, but get lost in the wilderness.

Cast

Production

The project was first developed in January 2012, with Mexican director Gerardo Naranjo set to direct the script by J. Mills Goodloe.[7] In August 2012, Scott Frank was hired to re-write the script.[8] In November 2014, Hany Abu-Assad replaced Naranjo[9] and later Chris Weitz was hired to re-write the script.[10]

Abu-Assad talking about the film said that, "I really didn’t see an epic love story against the background of survival, I think optimism and hope is crucial to survive. And to go on with your life even if you’ve had a lot of bad luck. So if you give (in) to the bad luck, you will die. (But) if you fight the bad luck, you have a better chance to survive and make your life better. This is very simple wisdom, yes? But still very crucial especially in these kind of days, when everybody feels entitled to their good luck."[11]

Casting

The film has gone through numerous casting change for the leads. In March 2012, it was announced that Michael Fassbender will star as Bass,[12] but by September 2014, Fassbender dropped out due to the scheduling conflict and Charlie Hunnam replaced him. Margot Robbie also came on board to star as Alex.[13] In November 2014, Robbie also dropped out of the project and Rosamund Pike entered the negotiations for the lead role.[9] In December 2015, both Hunnam and Pike dropped out of the project.[10]

In February 2016, Idris Elba came on board,[14] followed by Kate Winslet in June 2016.[15] Dermot Mulroney joined the cast as Winslet's fiancé in early February 2017.[16]

Filming

Principal photography started on 5 December 2016 in Vancouver and continued until 24 February 2017.[17][18] Elba and Winslet filmed scenes at the Vancouver International Airport on 6 December 2016.[19] Elba also filmed scenes at the Abbotsford International Airport on 7 December 2016.[20] Filming stopped for Christmas holidays from 20 December 2016 to 3 January 2017.[21]

Filming resumed around Invermere and Panorama Mountain Village on 4 January 2017.[22] Winslet was spotted filming scenes at Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody on 8 February 2017.[23]

Most of the filming took place in Canada on the border of Alberta and British Columbia. Abu-Assad talking about the tough and harsh filming conditions, described the locations as having very cold temperatures. Many scenes were shot on a mountaintop, and he and the crew had to drive 40 minutes before reaching film's base camp and if weather was okay then they could board the helicopter to reach their destination along with their supplies.[11]

On 19 July 2017, Winslet and Elba were spotted in London re-shooting some scenes from the film.[24]

Music

German-Iranian composer Ramin Djawadi will compose the music for the film.[25]

Releases

The film is scheduled to be screened at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.[26] The film was initially set for release in the United States on 20 October 2017,[27] but was later pushed back to 6 October 2017.[6]

Differences between novel and film

Winslet's character's name was changed from Ashley Knox to Alex Martin and Elba's character's surname from Payne to Bass in the film version.[11]
