The Buttertones are an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 2011. The band currently consists of guitarist and lead vocalist Richard Araiza, guitarist Dakota Böttcher, bassist Sean Redman (formerly of Cherry Glazerr), drummer Modesto 'Cobi' Cobiåne, and saxophonist London Guzmån.[1] Their music draws upon and straddles multiple genres, including doo-wop, surf music, garage rock, and punk rock.[2][3]
History
Formation and early years
The initial band formation consisted of Redman, Araiza and Cobi, who met at a music school in Hollywood in 2011.[1] Bonding over their interest in mid-twentieth century music, a shared work ethic, and a collective disillusionment with their peers, they first began playing music together at Redman's Hollywood apartment.[4] The band's name mirrors that of other doo-wop groups such as The Silvertones, and reflects their attempt to seamlessly blend an array of musical genres.[5] Their debut release was a self-titled cassette on L.A.'s garage-pop Lolipop label, recorded with Joel Jerome.
The trio were subsequently joined by Böttcher and Guzmån, after which they released their second album, American Brunch.[6]
The band has described their music-writing as a thoroughly collaborative process, with each member contributing in an ad hoc way.[1] Among their influences, the band cite The Sonics, The Doors, Ennio Morricone, The Beatles, The Monks and The Cramps.[7][8] The band have also cited their cat, Zelda Fitzgerald, as a great source of inspiration (albeit more emotional than musical).[9]
Gravedigging (2017)
The Buttertones' third album, Gravedigging, was released on March 31, 2017 under the record label Innovative Leisure. The album was recorded at Jazzcats studio in LongBeach in the spring of 2016, and was produced by Jonny Bell of Crystal Antlers.
The album was met with generally positive reviews upon its release. It has been described as 'refreshing and innovative',[10] 'stylish, dark, and a lot of fun',[11] and as comprising 'a nervy set of sordid, West Coast garage bangers that are as socially deviant as they are sonically familiar'.[12]
