Criticism and controversy

Helene Speight

Following her appearance on the show, Helene Speight alleged that The Apprentice had a bad influence on people who took part, stating her participation had "made her life a nightmare" and that had been the mistake of her life as she nearly "lost her life and sanity". The allegations came after it was revealed that she had collapsed with stress during filming and had to be rushed to hospital, yet still faced Alan Sugar in the boardroom, albeit "wincing in pain". During the eighth task, she began feeling sharp abdominal pains and took painkillers to hold on, whereupon she was later diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome after the producers took Helene to the Princess Grace Hospital in London's West End to be checked over. Commenting on her diagnosis in an interview, she was quoted as saying:[7]

"The doctors said it was all due to the pressure of the show and the diet I was eating. Hours later I was getting a boardroom grilling from Sir Alan after the wedding task. I was shaking with nerves convinced I was about to throw up all over Sir Alan and his sidekicks Nick and Margaret."

Nicholas De Lacy Brown and Alex Wotherspoon

After their participation on the show, two contestants claimed that they had received death threats. The first to reveal such threats, Nicholas De Lacy Brown, claimed that they had come from the show's viewers, with the messages threatening to either harm him or give explicit intent to kill him, with one message reported to read as "If I see you, I'll hurt you". However Nicoholas commented that he remained defiant and that he wouldn't be intimated by such messages.[8] The second to receive threats, Alex Wotherspoon, was reported to having one of them, an e-mail, being investigated by the BBC.[9]

Michael Sophocles and Jenny Celerier

Controversy arose after Michael Sophocles appeared on the show, following the seventh task. While some initially surrounded his claims of being a self-confessed "arrogant" person, much of it focused on a more prominent claim he made on his application for the show that he was "a good Jewish boy", after he was questioned for knowing either the meaning of "kosher" or the common Hebrew toast "L'Chaim" (translated "to life" as per the Fiddler on the Roof song of that name), along with it being alleged that he was shown to do the sign of the cross when he entered the boardroom.[9] Further controversy was created when it was reported that Sophocles was dating Lindi Mngaza, despite the fact that she was in a committed relationship at the time.[10]

Jenny Celerier also became the subject of notable controversy from the media, in which she was accused of bullying several fellow candidates during her appearance on the show, most notably Lucinda Ledgerwood and Sara Dhada, which led to her being compared to previous participate of Series 3, Katie Hopkins. Additional controversy also included revelations she had suffered meningitis during the filming of the programme, and claims that she cheated on her ex-boyfriend, Marc Sugden, left her son Simon on his own to play by a hotel pool whilst she was sunbathing, engaged in bondage games, and boasted of a three-in-a-bed sex romp with two other men.[11][12][13]

Simon Smith

Following his appearance on the show, Simon Smith admitted in an interview with the Sunday Mirror that he had spent five years being addicted to cocaine. In his interview, he revealed that his addiction began after he struggled to adjust back into civilian life after spending nine years in the British Army from the age of 17, and used the drug to ease his pain, stating that his addiction affected his marriage to his then-wife Debra, even during their honeymoon in 2002, to the point that it eventually broke down. Commenting on his addiction, he stated in his interview:[14][15]

"I blew over £20,000 on cocaine in five years. I was completely selfish. My whole life revolved around getting wrecked. The same competitive streak you saw in The Apprentice meant I felt I had to out-drink everyone, take more drugs than anyone else. I completely ripped my ex-wife's life apart. There is not a day goes by without me regretting how selfish I was. I broke her heart."

Ian Stringer

Controversy surrounded Ian Stringer following his appearance on the show. The first piece of controversy surrounded his ex-wife Kirsty branding him a "loverat", after he left her three weeks after she had given birth to their second child, claiming he abandoned his children in his quest for fame, leaving her to struggle financially after he gave up his job and £35,000 salary to partake on the show.[16] The second piece surrounded claims that he hid in a pub cellar to avoid being beaten up by the boyfriend of an ex-air hostess, despite them being in a committed relationship at the time.
