Tash Sultana is an Australian musician, singer-songwriter and looping artist from Melbourne. Described as a "one-woman band who brings new meaning to the concept of multi-tasking",[1] she is best known for her 2016 single "Jungle", which was voted into third place in the Triple J Hottest 100, 2016.

Sultana is a Maltese-Australian who has been playing guitar since she was three years old.[2] During her teenage years, she played in a band known as MindPilot from 2008 to 2012 as a guitarist/lead vocalist. She suffered from drug-induced psychosis at seventeen years old after consuming a pizza laced with magic mushrooms. Her career in music began through busking,[3] and she has been active as a musician on Bandcamp since 2013.[4]

In 2016, Sultana shared a video of herself performing on social media that garnered one million views within five days.[5] In the same year, she won the J Award for Unearthed Artist of the Year and had two of her tracks voted into the Triple J Hottest 100, 2016: "Jungle" (No. 3) and "Notion" (No. 32). Both are singles from her EP Notion. Sultana performed as part of the Strange Little Birds tour, and also at the Woodford Folk Festival, Southbound, and St Jerome's Laneway Festival.[6] She is currently managed by Lemon Tree Music with whom she signed in June 2016.[7]

Early life

Sultana was "conceived in Thailand" (according to her own saying) and raised in Melbourne, Australia.[8] She became a musician at a very young age, after she was given a guitar at the age of three.[9] She states that she has played guitar every day since. Her teenage band MindPilot played at shows and festivals all throughout Victoria and won state-wide competitions.[10] After her time in MindPilot, Sultana entered an induced psychosis, caused by eating hallucinogenic mushrooms on pizza. She was unable to distinguish the difference between reality and her imagination, and was stuck in that headspace for 7 months. Sultana described times when she would hear noises and imagine there are strangers in her home.[11]

Career

Post psychosis and Notion EP

Music was Sultana's escape from the psychosis. She busked and busked until the psychosis' effects eventually wore off. Sultana began to develop RSI in her hands, and as a response to that she began to loop instruments using pedals and effects. Her sound developed further and she released multiple singles and EPs on Bandcamp. She uploaded live home recordings on a regular basis and started developing a fanbase. A home recording of single "Jungle" went viral, gaining over 10 million views. Sultana went into the studio with producer Nikita Miltiadou and begun work on her first proper release: Notion. In March, 2016, Sultana released the EP through her own independent record label, Lonely Lands Records. The EP reached a peak position of number 4 on the ARIA Australian Albums Chart.[12]

World tours and "Murder to the Mind"

Due to the success of Notion, Sultana announced a world tour, including hundreds of shows around the world in Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. In order to become Sultana's roadie, her father resigned from his previous job. Sultana toured relentlessly around the globe for months on end. In April 2017, she announced the first single after the release of Notion. "Murder to the Mind" was released in April and Sultana worked with Miltiadou to produce the track. It reached the top 20 on the Australian Artist Singles chart.[13] Not long after the release of "Murder to the Mind", Sultana was diagnosed with laryngitis, and was forced to cancel and postpone shows across Australia.[14]

Debut LP

In a June 2017 interview, Sultana told Fairfax that her debut album is slated for release in April 2018, after which she will tour, record a second album, tour again, and then take a break and return to normal life.[15]

Homecoming Tour

On 25 July 2017, Sultana announced the Homecoming Tour. As part of the tour, Sultana will visit Adelaide (Entertainment Centre), Sydney (Hordern Pavilion), Fremantle (Arts Centre), Margaret River (3 Oceans Winery), Melbourne (Margaret Court Arena) and Noosa (Noosa Sporting Grounds), with support acts the Pierce Brothers and Willow Beats.[16]
