Taraori or Tarori or Tarawari, as it is sometimes called in the local dialect, is a city (Municipal committee) in Nilokheri Tehsil of Karnal district in the Indian state of Haryana. This town is situated off NH-1, 16 km north of Karnal. Name of Taraori is extracted from the word "Taraine" (ترائن). Taraori is famous for its Gurudwara of Shri Guru Teg Bahadur (9th Guru of Sikhs) (Shishganj sahib Gurudwara), fort of Prithviraj Chauhan and Basmati Rice.

History

It was here that in 1191 CE that the Hindu army under Prithviraj Chauhan had defeated the invading army of Muhammad of Ghaur. The following year Ghauri invaded again and defeated Prithviraj's forces at this same site (details : Battles of Tarain). A wall around the fort is now in a dilapidated condition. A mosque and a tank, said to be the works of Aurangzeb, are still in existence.


Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[3] Taraori had a population of 22,205. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Taraori has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 66%, and female literacy is 56%. In Taraori, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Most of the population works in agriculture, and Taraori has a worldwide reputation for its Basmati Rice. Basmati Rice is exported to the USA, Europe and the Middle East from here. There are a large number of rice mills and few small scale industries manufacturing dairy products, honey, soap, detergents etc. Taraori is also known for its most fertile land of Haryana.


Economy

Taraori area is famous for Basmati rice production and there are several rice mils in and around the city. It is claimed that Taraori has one of biggest grain market of Asia. Price quotes from Taraori Grain Market are published daily in many newspapers like Punjab Kesari and others.
