Take Me Apart is the upcoming debut studio album by American singer and songwriter Kelela. It is set to be released on October 6, 2017, through Warp Records.[1]
Background and release
On July 14, 2017, Kelela announced that the title of her debut album would be Take Me Apart.[2] On July 31, she revealed the cover art of the album.[3] On August 1, the album was made available for pre-order along with the release of its lead single, "LMK", which premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 show.[4] In an interview which followed the song's premiere, Kelela told Lowe that she has been working on Take Me Apart for four years. She also revealed that Arca and Jam City, who have worked with her on Hallucinogen and Cut 4 Me respectively, are "anchoring" the album and producing the bulk of the record.[5] Kelela said in a statement that the album expresses "an honest vision of how we navigate dissolving ties with each other and yet remain sanguine for the next chance at love," adding that "despite it being a personal record, the politics of my identity informs how it sounds and how I choose to articulate my vulnerability and strength. I am a black woman, a second-generation Ethiopian-American, who grew up in the 'burbs listening to R&B, jazz and Björk. All of it comes out in one way or another."[6]
A music video for "LMK" was uploaded to Kelela's Vevo channel on August 9, 2017. The video was directed by longtime Björk collaborator Andrew Thomas Huang. The video is "a surreal visual that sees Kelela moving through hazy, club-like environments with authority and a take-no-prisoners attitude." Regarding the video, Huang said: "We wanted make a video that showcases the multiplicity of who Kelela is and who she has the potential to be. The video is essentially a grand unveiling featuring Kelela wearing different wigs and guises as she pushes through the club with her friends, ultimately revealing herself at the end of the video. The message of this video is empowerment: it's for the girls, for anyone whose heart has been trampled on and deserves to go out and feel good about themselves. It's a call to action, demanding to be taken and to be quick about it. This is the reason why we love Kelela - she's making herself vulnerable and kicking down doors in the process."[7]
