Zoo Tabor – also known as Zoologická zahrada Tábor, a. s. (Zoological Garden Tabor Inc.) – was founded in May 2015. It is one of the newest zoos in Czech Republic. However, according to its area - which is now nearly 10 hectares – it is the biggest zoo in South Bohemian Region. Zoo Tabor is located in municipality Vetrovy – the southeast border of city Tábor.

Managing director of ZOO Tabor is Evzen Korec, owner and general director of residential development company EKOSPOL[1] in Prague.

History and present time

The former organization called Zoologická zahrada Tábor-Větrovy (Zoological Garden Tabor-Vetrovy) was founded in July 2011. But it was shut down after financial problems in spring 2015. The zoo continued as Zoologická zahrada Tábor a. s. (Zoological Garden Tabor Inc) but as a completely new company with a new owner.

ZOO Tabor was reopened on June 30th 2015[2]. The zoo welcomed more than 25 thousand visitors in the first month after the reopening. More than 70 thousand people visited ZOO Tabor in 2016.

Visitors can see more than 280 animals of more than 70 species – of which about one quarter belongs to endangered species. There is also one restaurant inside the area of the zoo.

Endangered animal species

Zoo Tabor wanted to be focused on endangered species protection. Currently has already some species classified according to the CITES agreement as endangered (for example Siberian tiger, American black bear, Brown bear, Arctic wolf, Baikal teal, Red-breasted goose, Great grey owl, Snowy owl, Eurasian eagle-owl etc.)

Zoo Tabor is breeding not only endangered species but also other animals. Between the newest breed belongs for example puppies of arctic wolf.

Reintroduction of European bison

In 2016. ZOO Tabor decided to start with breeding of European bison [3]and join the European effort to save this animal species which used to be a common part of Czech nature. Between February and May 2016, ZOO Tabor built a brand new pen (area of about 0.5 hectare). ZOO Tabor decided to breed the genetically most valuable line, so called Lowland line of European bison (which is more suitable for the reintroduction). ZOO Tabor got two cows (three years old Usjana and five years old Uselina) from the ZOO in Nuremberg and two one year old cows (Norma and Norisa) from a private owner Insel Usedom Wisentgehege in north Germany. All four cows were transported to ZOO Tabor in May 2016. The breeding bull, Poczekaj, arrived to the zoo in November 2016 from Niepolomice, a town near Krakow in Poland. The breeding herd was carefully formed in the cooperation with Czech coordinators of European bison breeding, Dalibor Dostal, MSc. and Miloslav Jirku, Ph.D. from charitable fund Česká krajina, Biotechnological Center of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Polish EBSB coordinators (Pedigree database of European bison). The main goal of ZOO Tabor is breeding of European bison calves and their return to areas intended for the reintroduction of European bison.

Book about the rescue of ZOO Tabor

In December 2016, a unique book „Jak jsem zachránil ZOO v Táboře“[4] (How I rescued ZOO Tabor) written by Evzen Korec and Filip Susanka was published. The book tells a special story about the rescues of ZOO Tabor and its animal residents. The book presents details of the takeover and more or less known stories of animals living in the zoo. Reader can learn about what preceded the acquisition of the zoo and which circumstances were important for the final decision to buy this zoo. This book is also describing first days and weeks of the new owner in ZOO Tabor. You can also find there many colourful photographs and interesting stories of animals living in the ZOO Tabor.
