Leadership programmes
The School of leadership is a youth leadership development initiative that is unique to Sutherland High School. It removes pupils from their comfort zones and uses hardship and sacrifice to prepare the participants for their ministry of Leadership. Pupils are given the opportunity to take part in series of programmes and activities that are specifically aimed at developing their leadership ability and personal growth. The skills that learners gain from such a course is not only aimed to develop the "school" learner but to provide the skills that they can use and keep for the rest of their lives.
Red blazer programme
Learners at Sutherland High School can sign up for the Red Blazer programme. This is the most prestigious award that the School of Leadership offers. Pupils who have completed the programme receive a Red Suthies Blazer at the beginning of their matric year, as representation of the skills they have attained. The main characteristics of a red blazer recipient are Respect, Integrity and Accountability. Below is a more extensive description of each requirement of the Red Blazer programmes.[1]
Desert walk
Desert walk is the first event that the School of Leadership offered. The event is different to all the other outdoor programmes that are on offer. It is aimed at developing the inner strength of learners. Learners are expected to endure through challenging physical activities and are given a limited amount of food and sleep. They work in teams and learn to appreciate the value of home cooked meals, the comfortable lives that we live and also spend some time in God's beautiful natural world. The learners are never put through anything that they cannot handle.
Mentor programme
The Mentor Programme was initiated in 2009 where Grade 8 pupils were allocated a Grade 11 pupil who would look after them, “showing them the ropes” of Sutherland High School and helping them deal with their first year of high school. The mentors are mainly responsible for their Grade 8 pupils’ well-being, holding them accountable in terms of their discipline, academics and participation in the school. The Mentors are selected and undergo training at the end of their Grade 10 year.
