SUITCASE Magazine is a multimedia travel magazine, first published in 2012 by business woman and philanthropist Serena Guen. The magazine is available as a quarterly print magazine, iPad and iPhone app, and a daily updated travel website.
Each quarterly print volume features global travel destinations by theme such as, Rhythm, Myths & Legends, and Art,[1] and features travel stories, city guides and fashion editorials.
Founder and CEO
Serena Guen founded SUITCASE Magazine during her final year at New York University.[2] The world’s youngest media proprietor[3] - Serena Guen’s work in publishing led to her listing in Forbes 30 Under 30,[4] a Women of the Future Award for media[5] and London Evening Standard 25 Under 25 Most Influential People nomination. She has been a member of the steering committee for UNICEF’s Next Generation London[6] since 2014 and co-founded a charitable movement called #CookForSyria which raised money for UNICEF’s Syria appeal.
Concept
The philosophy of SUITCASE Magazine is to discover new and eclectic holiday destinations for modern travellers. The magazine launched a new era for the travel magazine, one which saw the rise in popularity for independent travel magazines, while traditional travel magazines were starting to wane.[7] SUITCASE has also been credited for using models of varied races on its covers in a time where many magazines have been criticized for mainly using models of white ethnicity.[8]
History
SUITCASE Magazine published a best-selling cookbook, Cook For Syria the Recipe Book in 2016.[9] The cookbook raised money for UNICEF’s Children of Syria appeal in London,[10] Sydney[11] and Melbourne.[12] It was the only magazine authorised to conduct a photoshoot inside the World Cup 2014 Maracanã Stadium in Brazil ahead of the Rio Olympic Games for the cover of SUITCASE Volume 7 World Cup.[13] In 2016, the magazine partnered with Rolex to create bespoke personalised guides to major cities, such as London, New York City, Berlin, Paris and Rome, which offer 3 day itineraries including what to do, where to eat and where to stay.[14] One of SUITCASE’s videos, The Golden Age,[15] was also featured as a staff pick (SP) on Vimeo for visual imaging and live 3D projection mapping.
Awards and Accolades
SUITCASE Magazine has won awards from Digital Magazine Awards - Magazine of The Year,[16]; Travel Magazine of The Year,[16] where the judge’s comments were ‘The sheer quality of the writing and classy photography lifts this mag to a higher level. Absolutely love this magazine, published by the new breed of publishers, who embrace a multi-media experience. This magazine deserves to win a wider audience’; AITO - Travel Writer of the Year[17] for staff writers and contributors Emily Ames, Serena Guen, Maria Alafouzou and Hannah McKeand; Awwwards - a nomination for best website;[18]; winner of Best Art Direction in the Buenos Aires International Fashion Film Festival[19] for The Getaway,[20] a video starring Suki Waterhouse and Poppy Jamie and winner of Flight Centre's Best Travel Publication in the Travel Blog Awards 2017[21].
