Min Yoon-gi (Hangul: 민윤기; born March 9, 1993),[1] known professionally as Suga or Agust D, is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is a lead rapper of the South Korean boy group BTS, managed under Big Hit Entertainment. In August 2016, he released his first solo mixtape, Agust D.[2]

Early life

Min Yoon-gi was born on March 9, 1993, in Buk District, Daegu, South Korea. He has an older brother.[3]

Before his debut with BTS, he was an underground rapper going by the stage name "Gloss".[4] Yoongi decided to become a rapper after listening to "Fly" by Epik High.

Career

BTS

On June 13, 2013, Suga made his debut as a member of BTS on Mnet's M Countdown with the track "No More Dream" from their debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool.[5]

On December 9, 2013, during their promotions in Japan, Suga was diagnosed with appendicitis and had to be flown back to Korea to receive surgery. Due to his surgery, Suga was therefore unable to participate in the 2014 Idol Star Athletics Championships, BTS's SBS Gayo Daejeon and MBC Gayo Daejejeon year-end performances.[6]

As a member of BTS, he has produced, composed, and written lyrics for a variety of tracks on BTS's albums.

Solo work

His first mixtape was released on August 16, 2016 under the name Agust D, combining his stage name spelled backwards with the initials of "D-Town", which is the name of his old hiphop crew in Daegu.[7] The mixtape was 4 years in the making, entirely produced by Suga himself and explores many socially conscious themes such as his past experience with depression, suicidal thoughts, and social phobia.[8] Two tracks from his mixtape, "Agust D" and "Give It to Me" had music videos released on YouTube, with the former reaching over 1 million views within 12 hours.[9] He was also listed as one of the weekly Artists to Watch by TIDAL Rising on September 14, 2016.[10]

Suga was listed as the main producer for fellow musician Suran's song, "Wine", in April 2017. The song topped multiple charts and stayed #1 on Melon's realtime chart for several weeks.[11]
