The Stygarctidae are a family of tardigrades.[1] The family was named in 1951.

Etymology

Its etymology is of Greek origin (stygarct- from στυγάρκτος (stygarktos) and it species nearly looks like a bear.

History

A subfamily Neostygarctinae was named in 1987 which featured Neostygarctus[2], it would be placed as a synonym of Stygarctinae in 2012 by Hansen, Kristensen and Jørgensen.[3]

Genera

One of the subdivisions named after are one of the species are founded, the Faeroe Islands, named in 2012. The others has Greek etymology including Megastygarctides, Mesostygarctus, Neostygarctus, Parastygarctys, Prostygarctus, Pseudostygarctus and Stygarctus. The newest one is Prostygarctus described and named in 2013.
